Santa Susanna holidays put coastal Catalonia front and centre. This family friendly resort offers 15th to 18th-century watchtowers, Barcelona daytrips and a triple beach offering, thanks to Platja de les Dunes, Platja de Llevant and Platja de les Caletes. Relaxed seaside bliss at its best…
If there’s anything that showcases the historic charm of this place, it’s Santa Susanna Old Town, with its cobbled streets and 15th-century pirate watchtowers. They give you a glimpse of what it was like to live here when people like Jack Sparrow weren’t just fictional characters, and there are seven remaining, so you’re sure to go back to base with a full camera roll. And there’s a nature-packed side, too. Veer away from the 2km of golden sand along the coast, and you can visit Montenegre and El Corredor Natural Park. This huge protected area is ideal for hiking and cycling.
In Santa Susanna, nightlife revolves around the palm-lined promenade. Dining options along this stretch include fresh seafood spots, which regularly top Santa Susanna restaurant recommendation lists. It’s just a 20-minute taxi to Lloret de Mar, where there’s a busy strip lined with clubs and discos, and you can get to Malgrat de Mar’s Bar Street in even less time. For something different, why not attend one of the Medieval banquets at Castell Medieval de Valltordera? Jousting and flamenco’s part of the package here.
Santa Susanna’s beaches come as a trio. Platja de les Dunes is best for watersports like sailing and windsurfing, while Platja de Llevant has the family-friendly appeal, thanks to floating inflatable play areas. And if it’s peaceful rocky coves you’re after, Platja de les Caletes is a winner. The entire coastline’s backed by pretty pine groves, and there’s a beachfront promenade, where local summer craft markets give you somewhere to pick up souvenirs.
You’ll want to make the most of the Santa Susanna to Barcelona train link while you’re here. It comes every 30 minutes and is just a one-hour journey to Catalonia’s capital, so you can go on spontaneous city adventures whenever you fancy. Join the crowds gawking up at the famous Sagrada Familia basilica, then scope out Park Guell’s architecture. It’s one of the biggest green spaces in the city, and features lots of Gaudi’s signature mosaics. And you can browse boujee shops along Las Ramblas’ boulevards, before leaving the city buzz behind for peaceful Santa Susanna.
