Sleepy fishing village

Things are pretty quiet here, but this little coastal spot still has its old fishing village charm. Platja de Fornells is plotted between Sa Tuna and Tamariu, along the Costa Brava’s scenic coastline. It’s best known for the secluded coves that dot the coastal path and its quaint harbour. There are a couple of places to eat along the waterfront, too, but if you drive 10 minutes down the road, you’ll reach Begur – it’s a small historical town, where the seafood restaurants are first rate.

Tucked-away coves

Staying in Platja de Fornells puts you within walking distance of lots of secluded coves, plus a couple of wider sandy beaches. A couple worth a mention are N’Estasisa and Cala Malaret. The first of these rocky coves has a ramp leading out to sea, and the latter has a few steps which lead down to a sandy patch. Platja Fonda, meanwhile, is more like a traditional beach. Head down a long set of steps and you can bury your feet into the coarse dark sandy strip that’s nestled between cliffs.

Beside Begur

Begur’s just a 10-minute drive away from this sleepy fishing village. A Medieval castle overlooks the town, and the typical Spanish architecture is mixed with a Cuban-inspired style. The contrast of the gothic church and the American-style houses show off the mingling of cultures. Plus, this small town has a good selection of restaurants where you’ll likely find rockfish on the menu, as well as Mediterranean classics like fish stew and a medley of seafood rice dishes.
