Lagadin holidays

Lake Ohrid

Lagadin holidays hit that sweet spot between beach flopping-and-dropping and exploring North Macedonia's centuries-old roots.

Serene scenery

Sandwiched between Lake Ohrid’s eastern shore and the green hills of Galičica National Park, Lagadin’s got more than its fair share of natural beauty. It’s as good a spot as any for soaking up the area’s knockout views, with crystal-clear water stretching out to the hazy mountains in the distance. There are only a handful of hotels here, so there’s a real tranquil feel and you’ll be away from the hustle and bustle of the larger towns around the lake.

Go for a paddle or a peddle

Lagadin’s right on the water’s edge, with only a road separating the hotels from the pebble beaches that’re dotted along the shore. Grab your swimming cozzie and find your favourite spot to flop down on a towel, or pay a little extra for a lounger to kick back on. When it’s time to cool off, go for a dip or pop to the beach bar for a cold drink or an ice-cream. And if you fancy venturing beyond the beach, you can hire stand-up paddleboards and pedalos here too.

Step back in time

North Macedonia’s brimming with age-old towns packed with history, and Lagadin’s a great base for exploring what’s around Lake Ohrid. Tick some of these off your list with a boat tour – along the way you’ll visit the Bay of Bones Museum, a replica of a Bronze Age village, and the Monastery of St Naum, one of the country’s oldest churches. For more must-see sights, hop in a taxi or catch the bus to Ohrid, where you can step back in time at the 13th-century Church of St John at Kaneo and Tsar Samuel’s Fortress.

Beaches

Green Paradise beach

This is first beach you’ll hit as you come into Lagadin. It’s small and pebbly, with plenty of shady trees to sit under and keep cool. Hire a sun lounger and a parasol for a comfier set-up, and there’s a convenient little beach bar too, so your drinks and snacks are sorted.

Lagadin beach

Walk a couple of minutes past the town centre and you’ll reach another little beach. There isn’t much here, but it’s a peaceful place to go for a swim, and you can hire a stand-up paddleboard too.

Food & drink

Eating out

Lagadin’s got a few restaurants to choose from. You’ll be able to try some traditional North Macedonian dishes, from fragrant stews to grilled meat and fish. And for a tipple, make sure you taste the local vranec and Pivka wine.

Regional recommendations at Restaurant Dionis

This low-key restaurant in the middle of town keeps things simple with big portions and lots of flavour. Take a seat under the leafy pergola and fill up on homemade specialities, like pork stew or pastrmalija, a pizza-like flatbread.

Casual cuisine at Restaurant Dva Bisera

Another spot that’s great for a laid-back lunch or a relaxed evening meal, you’ll find more North Macedonian staples here, like slow-cooked meat and potatoes. For something lighter, go for grilled veggies, fresh fish or a tangy tomato salad drizzled in balsamic vinegar.

A meal with a view at Utarna Terrace

For something a little different, take a 20-minute taxi ride up into the hills to this traditional stone restaurant. It’s got a real authentic feel with lots of wood and red gingham tablecloths, and you’ll have a knockout view over the lake while you eat. The menu’s got a Mediterranean vibe, like stuffed vine leaves and feta salads, along with all of the classic North Macedonian dishes.

Getting about

Buses

There's a bus to Ohrid from the town centre every hour or so, and the journey takes about 10 minutes. This is a super quick and easy way to see the sights around the lake, and its cheaper than a taxi too.

On foot

Lagadin's pretty compact so you can walk to the restaurants, beaches and supermarket in no time at all. The town's next to a main road, so if you fancy exploring further afield, a taxi is your best bet.
