Mix leisurely days by the lake with trips to see the sights on a holiday to Dolno Konjsko.

Lakeside living

With just a handful of hotels and a laidback atmosphere, Dolno Konjsko feels a million miles from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Set midway down the eastern side of Lake Ohrid, you’ve got far-reaching views over the water to the mountains beyond. Make the most of the shoreside spot and spend your days swimming and soaking up the sunshine.

Out and about in Ohrid

Itching to explore? Take a 15-minute taxi ride up the lake shore and spend the day in the ancient town of Ohrid. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, its home to impressive historical buildings, from a Roman theatre to one of the biggest medieval fortresses in North Macedonia. As for lunch spots, you’ve got a row of waterfront restaurants to choose from, where you can tuck into freshly caught fish and take in lake views.

All aboard to see the sights

Two of Lake Ohrid’s must-see sites are super simple to visit by boat – just reserve your place and hop aboard to get there. Take a day trip to the Bay of Bones Museum, where you can see a reconstruction of a Bronze Age settlement built on platforms over the lake itself. And a little further down the shoreline is the Monastery of St Naum. Dating back to 905AD, it’s one of North Macedonia’s oldest churches, and inside the walls and ceilings are covered with centuries-old frescoes.

Beaches

Dolno Konjsko beach

Walk a few minutes from the centre of the village to get to this scenic stretch of pebble shoreline. Leafy trees provide plenty of natural shade, and when you fancy cooling off you can wade into the shallows for a paddle, or make splash jumping into the lake from the end of the jetty.

Gradiste beach

You’ll need to take a 15-minute taxi or book a spot on the ferry to get here, but it’s well worth it. This is one of the liveliest lakeside spots in the area, and once you’re there, you’ll be set for the day. Spend your time drifting between your lounger and the lake, then swing by one of the bars for music and cocktails.

If you’re after a true taste of Macedonia, try Gostilnica Grne. Sample local favourites like fish soup and tavče gravče – a flavoursome bean stew that comes served in a traditional earthenware pot straight from the oven. Then round things off with a flaky baklava pastry filled with chopped nuts and drizzled in honey.
