Sand, sea and shopping
If you’re looking for a holiday that’s all about sunbathing, sampling local cuisine and shopping, you’re in luck. Marina di Ragusa’s sand-drizzled waterfront serves up over a kilometre and a half of prime sun-tanning territory. It’s backed by a bar-and-restaurant-lined promenade, so you don’t need to stray far for a snack or a cocktail. You’ll find plenty of shops within a stone’s throw of the sand, too, Here, you can splash out on a new wardrobe, or browse for some authentic souvenirs – handmade pottery and bottles of red wine are popular picks in this part of Sicily – in between soaking sessions in the sea.
Towers, pirates and ruin-filled parks
Holidays to Marina di Ragusa have plenty for history fans to get their hands on. The area’s been populated since the days of the ancient Greeks, with ruins that date back to the 5th century BC – like the Archaeological Park of Caucana – within 10 minutes’ drive. The town was also one of Sicily’s biggest ports in the 1500s, and in 1596 a fortified tower, Torre Cabrera, was built to protect it from pirates. These days, the battlement’s been turned into a hotel, but you can still snap some pictures of its preserved sandstone foundations.
Postcard-worthy port
Marina di Ragusa’s pride and joy, meanwhile, is its modern harbour. This trendy spot’s filled with yachts all year round, and a flock of shops, restaurants and bars has sprung up to look after mariners and tourists alike. The port’s the place to be if heading out on the water’s on your to-do list, as well – watersports like kitesurfing, paddle-boarding and sailing are all on the cards here.
