Holidays to Afandou show off an authentic face of Rhodes – one of carpet shops, traditional Greek restaurants and a real café culture.
The village of Afandou wraps around Rhodes’ north-east coast. It’s one of the bigger villages on the island, and it’s cloaked in fruit and olive trees. It’s also home to the isle’s longest beach, which stretches for around 7 kilometres, switching from golden sand to smooth pebble and back again.
The village square is the heart of Afandou. It’s full of age-old carpet shops, coffee houses and mama’s kitchen-style restaurants, where the menus showcase the very best of Greek home cooking. In the summer months, a little blue train chugs through the centre, whisking visitors from the town to the beach. There’s a pretty church here, too, which showcases a collection of 17th-century paintings.
The nightlife here is fairly low-key, although you’ll find a few ouzo bars in the twisting lanes leading off from the village square. If you want something livelier, you’re not far from the resort of Faliraki. It’s only a 10-minute drive from Afandou, and it’s full of nightclubs and karaoke spots.
