Holidays to Nikiana take you to a quiet village with waterside bars and restaurants – and a little sandy beach, too. Then there's nightlife in Nidri and history in Lefkas Town.
Nikiana is a relaxed fishing village nestled at the foothills of Mount Skaros on the east coast of Lefkas. It’s a tranquil little spot with authentic Greek tavernas on the waterside and friendly bars in the village centre, not to mention a secluded little beach along the coast. The nearby town of Nidri helps out with the nightlife, while the capital, Lefkas Town, is a good daytrip option.
The east coast of Lefkas is on the pebbly side, so it’s a real bonus that Nikiana comes with a little stretch of sand. And it’s nicely fitted out with sunloungers and umbrellas, as well as a couple of beachfront tavernas. Should you want to try out the sand elsewhere, you’ve got the other side of the island within 25 minutes’ drive. There’s a lively stretch at Kathisma where they’re big on watersports – the beachfront tavernas are the place to go to sign up for paragliding.
Historic Lefkas Town is just 15 minutes’ drive away. The place is spoilt for 17th- and 18th-century churches, and there are also exhibits of traditional dresses and textiles at the Folklore Museum. A road bridge from town over to mainland Greece is home to a 14th-century sea fortress – it’s on a little islet halfway across the bridge and today you can still tour the intact old walls.
