Holidays to Stalis put you in a laidback Greek resort town that’s also close to the action without ever feeling hectic. It sits between lively Malia and buzzing Hersonissos, so you can dip into their nightlife and shops whenever you like, then retreat to Stalis’ beaches when you want something calmer.
Stalis sits between Hersonissos to the west and Malia to the east, but it has a pretty calm vibe despite having two of Crete’s liveliest resorts on its doorstep. Once a traditional Greek fishing village, Stalis is now a relaxed seaside town known for its Venetian‑style streets and easygoing atmosphere. A long sweep of sand is one of the resort’s highlights. Stalis also makes a great base for daytrips to the Palace of Knossos or the scenic Lassithi Plateau.
Stalis opens onto a six-and-a-half‑kilometre run of golden sand that forms part of an eight-kilometre chain of beaches stretching towards Malia. The Stalis end is the calmest, with family‑friendly shallow waters, a gently shelving shore, and traditional tavernas and romantic seafront eateries lining the promenade. As you move east, the beach shifts into Malia’s territory, where watersports and nightlife take over for livelier afternoons and after‑dark energy.
Malia’s a 20‑minute walk from Stalis, giving you quick access to its 24‑hour party scene and clubs where international DJs make appearances. Just beyond the strip, the old town offers a quieter side with whitewashed houses and traditional tavernas. Buses and mini train transport – AKA The Happy Train – run between the resorts by day. Plus, a taxi after a night out is usually only around €10. Families also have loads to dive into, thanks to a host of safe beaches and child‑friendly bars.
