Holidays to Podstrana give you a mix of culture and beach, putting Roman ruins and see-through waters on your doorstep.
A couple of miles south of Split, you’ll find sleepy Podstrana. Thanks to its pretty sand-and-pebble coastline, this place has made a name for itself as the area’s go-to beach retreat. Not only does the shoreline stretch for nine kilometres, it also delivers gin-clear waters and a mountain backdrop.
Podstrana was once ruled by the Romans and you can see plenty of what they left behind. A visit to the old town is like stepping back in time – Greeks, Slavs and Venetians have all left their mark. Narrow streets lead to churches, centuries-old stone houses and graveyards full of Roman remains, statues and mosaics.
Podstrana is a great base for exploring Croatia’s island-speckled coastline. Get the bus to Split and hop on a boat across to Brač. A lot of Croatians have holiday homes on the picture-perfect island, and you’ll see why. The stones and beaches are whiter-than-white here. You might recognise the main stretch, Zlatni Rat. It means Golden Cape and features on most postcards and posters.
