How to make the most of your South African rand on holiday

If you’re about to take a trip to Johannesburg or Cape Town, make sure you’ve got your South African rand ready to go. It’s also a good idea to have some rand if you’re heading to Zimbabwe, where it’s one of the accepted currencies. There are 100 cents in each South African rand.

In early 2023, you could get around 19.98 South African rand, or ZAR, to the pound. Exchange rates vary, but this is about average.

Where to get the South African rand

Your nearest TUI Store is the place to order your South African rand if you want good rates. You can also use the TUI Travel Money Card, which means you can add money to the card for free to use while you’re on holiday. It’s perfect if you don’t want to carry too much cash.

A guide to using the South African rand abroad

You may be able to budget for as little as 1000 South African rand per day, but there’s so much to see and do in Johannesburg and Cape Town especially, that allowing for up to 2000 ZAR isn’t a bad idea.

If you need more cash, ATMs are pretty much everywhere. Even if you’re in one of the country’s more rural towns, you’ll be likely to find an ATM somewhere.

Tipping isn’t expected in South Africa, but it’s appreciated. Even smaller tips are welcomed – you don’t need to tip a certain amount to show your gratitude for good service.
