How to make more of your Jamaican dollars on holiday

Planning a beach holiday in Jamaica? Then now’s the time to get your currency sorted.

The official currency of Jamaica is the Jamaican dollar, or J$, but US dollars are also widely accepted. If you’ll be visiting places outside of the tourist centres, you’ll want to take Jamaican dollars. In big resort areas, you can usually get by with USD.

The exchange rate varies of course, but in early 2023 the average rate was J$ 175 to the pound.

Where to get Jamaican dollars

You can easily order Jamaican dollars from TUI online. If you’d rather buy them in person, find your nearest TUI Store here and you can pick them up. US dollars tend to be more readily available than Jamaican dollars, but you should be able to get hold of both if you request them in advance.

It’s worth noting that if you’re staying in an all-inclusive resort you may not need any Jamaican dollars – pricing here is often done in US dollars.

A guide to using Jamaican dollars

It’s easy to make your budget go a long way in Jamaica, particularly if you get into the habit of bargaining in the markets. If you’re concerned about how much money you’ll need, use the TUI budget calculator before you jet off and plan accordingly.

Tipping around 10% is normal in restaurants and hotels, although some all-inclusive resorts have a no-tipping policy to watch out for. Do check your bill to make sure service hasn’t already been included.
