Best time to visit the Maldives

Planning a Maldives escape? Here's when to go.
The best time to visit the Maldives is between November and April – at this time of year you can expect dry, sunny days and plenty of blue skies. But toasty temperatures are only part of the deal here – the Maldives set the standard for tropical getaways. The sand is powder white and the water visibility make its scuba diving scene one of the best in the Indian Ocean. With 26 natural atolls – otherwise known as coral islands – to choose from, you can spend your holiday trying out watersports, getting to know Maldivian culture, or island hopping. Not a bit of you? No problem – it’s the perfect place to switch off beside a pool. Want to find out what to expect at different times of the year? Read on for the lowdown...

When’s dry season?

There are two seasons in the Maldives – dry and rainy. Dry – or peak – season takes place from December to April. Just in case you hadn’t guessed, the weather is driest at this time of year, and the humidity is at its lowest. Temperatures average around 30°C during the UK’s coldest months, making the Maldives a great option for a winter warmer. The weather isn’t the only perk, either – water visibility is at its best during the warmer months thanks to drier conditions and calmer seas, perfect for snorkelling and scuba diving around the islands’ coral reefs. When’s rainy season?

Rainy season, AKA the ‘South West Monsoon’, runs from May to November. While this time of year sees fewer tourists, temperatures are still high, so the sea’s still warm enough for scuba diving. And if it does rain, you’ve got the perfect excuse to explore the islands’ spas, which offer both traditional and Maldivian therapies while making the most of the surrounding natural beauty. Think treatment rooms on stilts over lagoons or under palapas on the beach, romantic retreats on their own islands, and even the world’s first underwater spa. Rainy season is also the best time to spot manta rays and whale sharks – at this time of the year, they’re both drawn to the waters surrounding the atolls due to strong currents which drive plankton, AKA their favourite meal.

When’s the cheapest time to go to the Maldives?

If you’re looking for a great deal, visit the Maldives during the wet season, when you’ll likely pay a lot less for your trip. Rainfall reaches its peak in October, so you might want to pack a brolly if you’re planning to visit then. To bag a deal and avoid the heaviest downpours, tick off a trip in June, July or August – the rainy season’s driest months.

How many days do I need in the Maldives?

Direct flights from the UK to Male – home to Maldives’ international airport – take around 10 hours. If you’re making a stop en route, the trip can take up to 14 hours. The Maldives are also four or five hours ahead of the UK, depending on the time of year you visit, so it’s worth giving yourself a day or two to adjust to the time difference and refresh after your flight. With that in mind, we reckon you’ll need at least seven days in the Maldives to give yourself enough time to relax and explore. If it’s your first time, you might want to stay a little longer – if the annual leave allows. The good news? Our holiday options make it easy to find a break that suits your schedule – you can take your pick of everything from 7-night to 15-night breaks.
