Make a beeline for Binibeca Vell

Wind your way around the narrow alleyways, past the sugar-cube homes and the wooden balconies draped in bougainvillaea, and you might think this Grecian-looking village has stood on the coast for centuries. Plot twist – it’s only been here since the 1970s. Peace (well, silence, actually) is the order of the day here, and you’ll find signs as you stroll through the dinky but delightful streets reminding you to keep it hush-hush. Big blue calling you? Cala Binibeca – with its sheltered coves, shingle shore and jewel-toned water – is the place to be.

Meander around Mahon

Menorca’s capital city is colourful and culture-rich. Tucked in a natural harbour, Mahon (or Mao if you speak the local language, Catalan) is a mix of old and new – think typical pastel-painted Spanish townhouses and impressive Georgian-era British architecture. Stop for a coffee and an ice-cream in a cute café, or nosey around the charming shops. History lover? The Museum of Menorca, with its 17th-century monastery setting, is just a five-minute stroll from the main square.

Pinch a piece of Pintxos at Mercat de Peix

Menorca scores highly on the world’s food scale, but you don’t have to splash the cash to try the top-notch cuisine here. Mercat de Peix, in Ciutadella, is the place to taste Pintxos. Pronounced ‘pin-cho’, these bite-sized delights hail from the Basque region in Spain and have made their way across the Med to Menorca. Layering tasty toppings like olives, peppers, meat and fish on crusty bread, they’re the perfect snack to fuel your exploring. Need something to wash it all down with? Mercat de Peix’s large bar has local beers and wines by the bottle or the glass – we’ll have a sangria, please.

Check out Casa Olivar in Ciutadella

Famed for being Menorca’s second city – and once its capital – this pocket-sized port town has bragging rights over Mahon, looks wise. It’s known to the locals as ‘Vella i Bella’ (old and beautiful), and flaunts gold-tinged cathedrals, a maze of Medieval streets and imposing archways. For a glimpse of what life used to be like for the rich folk of Menorca, visit 15th-century Casa Olivar. Here, you’ll find opulent antiques and lavish tapestries.

Uncover Cova d'en Xoroi bar

Go slow is a no-go here. This bar-come-nightclub carved into the cliffside is one to rival its party island neighbours. By day, it’s a sun-kissed coast hang out, serving drinks like pomada – a tangy combo of Menorcan gin and sweet lemonade. By night, DJs bring the Balearic beats to a sunset backdrop.

Answer the call of Cala Mitjana beach

It’s no secret that beaches are a big deal in Menorca, and Cala Mitjana gets our vote as the best secluded spot. There’s not a single café, bar or restaurant, so packing a picnic of tasty treats to see you through from sunrise to sunset is a must. Here, pine-fringed peace meets electric blue waters, and you don’t have to dive deep to find calas (coves) carved into the landscape. Sucker for a clifftop view? Pack your walking shoes to explore the nearby trails in between dips.

Choose a local cheese

What do you get when you mix a Mediterranean climate with rainfall and fertile soil? The perfect queso de Mahon cheese, of course. Subadia Farm, nestled in Menorca’s mountainside, is the best place to try some. Opt for a farm tour here and you’ll get to see the ageing process of the clothbound cheese and the opportunity to help milk the cows.
