Stroll along the Malecon boardwalk

For local culture and entertainment, the Malecon is the place to be. Located along the city’s waterfront, you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to restaurants, tequila bars, and street-food stalls. During your strolls, look out for the open-air art galleries and street performers – there’s usually always some form of live music on show here. This promenade’s got loads of photo ops for the gram, too. Strike a pose in front of the iconic La Nostalgia sculpture, catch the sunset over the ocean and get a photo next to the colourful Puerto Vallarta sign.

This trendy area’s home to high-end shopping, world-class dining, and a marina filled with huge yachts. Tuck into a gourmet meal of fresh seafood with a backdrop of the Pacific or treat yourself to a laidback yacht ride to nearby Banderas Bay – where there’s never a shortage of thing to do from day to night.

Get up close to the El Caballito sculpture

If it’s historic landmarks you’re after, a visit to the famous "El Caballito" sculpture is a must. Also located along the Malecon promenade, this sculpture pays tribute to the city's rich maritime history and features a fisherman riding a seahorse. Crafted by Rafael Zamarripa in the late 1960s, the original sculpture was swept into the sea during a powerful storm. However, due to its cultural significance, a larger replica was commissioned and placed on the Malecon in 1976, becoming the first of many statues in an open-air exhibit along the waterfront.

Dive into the underworld at Parque Nacional Los Arcos

This marine park’s known for its natural beauty and tropical wildlife and is a top pick for both expert divers and beginner snorkellers. With tonnes of fish and lots of different underwater landscapes, like deep tunnels, caves and arches, this site would give the sets from The Little Mermaid a run for their money. Plus, the clear water means you’ll have a clear look at all the fish and coral that call this place home. Speaking of classic films, this bay also featured in the 1960s classic Night of the Iguana – now that’s certainly something to write home about.

Tap into tradition in Puerto Vallarta’s old town

Puerto Vallarta's old town will peak your fancy if you want to get to know the city’s traditional side. This area offers a glimpse into the spiritual heritage of the city, especially around The Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Constructed over several decades in the early 20th century, this neo-baroque cathedral is known for its impressive bell tower, which is capped by a silver crown of angels. When you’re done snapping selfies out front, don’t forget to head inside for a look at its whitewashed interior and gold-wrapped alter.
