Best hotels in Iceland

Heading to Reykjavik? Find your perfect Icelandic base.

Holidays to Iceland line up some of the world’s best sights. We’ve all heard of the iconic Northern Lights and the blissful Blue Lagoon that’s like hundreds of hot tubs in one. But where should you stay after a hard day’s exploring in the country’s famous national parks? Iceland’s home to a whole range of hotels, from well-known joints like the Radisson Blu 1919 Hotel, to budget hotels and boutique hotels. We’ve got indulgent hotels perfect for luxury travellers – complete with the likes of deluxe rooms, and room service – as well as modern hotels that put location first. Take a look at our top five places to stay in Iceland…

1. THE ART DECO ONE

If you’re after a stylish stay in a luxury hotel, the four-star Hotel Borg is the one for you. It’s set in a 1930s Art Deco hotel, so expect winding staircases, fancy bathrooms, and period features. Plus, the bar lounge is the perfect place to kick back after a day of exploring.

2. THE ONE WITH THE BEER GARDEN

Fosshotel Reykjavik is the biggest hotel that the country has to offer. Its decor is modern – think steely grey with accents of blue. You can tuck in to traditional Icelandic cuisine in the restaurant, but that’s not your only option when it comes to food and drink. As well as a good room service selection, there’s the beer garden, too. A hipster haven, with copper decorations and fancy light fixtures, it offers a huge range of craft ales, lagers, and beers, alongside hot dogs and vegan eats.

3. THE CENTRAL ONE

The clue’s in the name with the Centerhotel Plaza. Walk out of the door of this hotel and you’ll find a selection of restaurants and bars right on your doorstep. It’s set on the edge of a bustling square, plus, you can stroll for five minutes and you’ll hit the harbour. If you want to stay in for a drink, the Plaza Bar’s open fire and candlelit tables provide a perfect cosy setting.

4. THE ONE WITH THE AWARD-WINNING RESTAURANT

Foodies, listen up. The restaurant at the Reykjavik Centrum is ideal for you. Its name – Fjalakötturinn – might be a mouthful, but its meals have reviewers raving. It’s even bagged a TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice award. The menu features the likes of fresh seafood, beef tenderloin and shrimp ceviche. The hotel also has its own Viking museum, so it’s a great place to get up to speed on Icelandic culture.

5. THE TECHIE-FRIENDLY ONE

Decor-wise, the Alda Hotel keeps things stylish with its mixture of contemporary greys and bright pops of colour. For drinks, the Barber Bar mixes up cocktails, or you can choose from a selection of draught beer, wine, and even Champagne. On arrival at the hotel, you’ll be given a smartphone that you can use throughout your stay. Use it to book a table at a local restaurant, or to get directions to an attraction without using up your own data. What’s more, the hotel’s near the city centre so you won’t be far away from the action.
