Gran Canaria calling? Here's where to base yourself on the island.

As far as holiday destinations go, Gran Canaria’s part of the world’s vintage collection. With year-round sunshine, an impressive beach scene and villages ripe for exploring, it’s no surprise the third-largest Canary Island has been a holiday favourite since the late 19th century. Our list of the best hotels in Gran Canaria will help kick off your search for a getaway that’s tailored to you. Read on to find your perfect hotel…

BEST FOR LUXURY

When it comes to browsing luxury hotels in Gran Canaria, you can easily narrow down your search by checking their star ratings. With stunning lagoon-style swimming pools, a lazy river and jungle-like gardens, the Lopesan Baobab Resort has definitely earned its five star status. The hotel brings a taste of Africa to the Canary Islands through its stylish safari-lodge look and its à la carte eatery, where exotic meats are on the menu.

Wondering where you’ll be resting your head? The rooms and suites are as stylish as they come – chic neutral colours are combined with animal-print accessories, and for an extra splash of luxury, you can upgrade to a swim-up room. Plus, if you book a UNIQUE suite, you'll be treated to extras, including in-room luxuries like Bvlgari toiletries and Nespresso machines, as well as access to an exclusive pool area. The hotel’s tucked just behind Meloneras’ promenade. This means you’ve got one of the island’s most famous landmarks – the Maspalomas lighthouse – and a stretch of caramel-coloured sand within a 10-minute wander. Don’t feel like leaving the hotel? You’ve got things like tennis, aerobics and mini-golf, as well as a chic spa, right on your doorstep.

BEST FOR VIEWS

Searching for a hotel with a view in Gran Canaria? Look no further. The Lopesan Costa Meloneras Resort is perfectly placed for sea and mountain vistas. When you’re booking, you can pick which views you’d like to soak up from your private balcony. Design-wise, this place is more like a big palace than a hotel. Outside, four huge pools wind through the gardens– some of them are sea-view numbers, and one looks just like a sand-skirted lagoon. Take a walk to the edge of the grounds and you’ll land right on Maspalomas Beach.

Feeling peckish? On top of two buffet places, the hotels offers an Argentinian steak house and first-class Italian and seafood restaurants. However, the crème de la crème is the gourmet restaurant, which serves fresh local dishes with a contemporary twist. Fancy some adults-only relaxation? Head to the state-of-the-art spa. As well as four hydro-massage pools, it’s got a sauna, two steam baths, an ice igloo and a Himalayan salt grotto. Plus there’s a menu of more than 80 treatments, from manicures to massages. And, if you want to ramp up the luxury factor further, upgrade to a UNIQUE suite. These rooms come with plenty of extras, including relax packs filled with aromatic candles, oils or bath salts, and flower petals.

BEST FOR TRADITION

Lopesan Villa Del Conde Resort and Thalasso is modelled on a traditional Canarian village. The architects have added authentic-looking touches – like a full-scale replica of one of the island’s oldest churches – and there’s a cobbled central square where you’ll find one of the hotel’s à la carte eateries. This place is family friendly, so if you’ve got little ones in tow, they’ll be kept busy with a daily line-up of activities at the kids’ club.

Grown-ups are left with plenty of time to hop between the five outdoor pools, float around the lazy river and practise their swing on the putting green. There’s an 18-hole golf course skirted by the Maspalomas Sand Dunes within a five-minute drive, too. If that sounds far too energetic, retreat to your room – the UNIQUE suites come loaded with luxury touches – or book a massage at the spa. It’s combined with a thalassotherapy centre, where you can float in a gravity pool, or take a shower infused with essential oils. Ready to find your zen?
