Best hotels in Germany

Heading to Germany? Try these hotels in Berlin, Munich and Cologne and start planning your perfect trip.
Germany’s a dab hand at city breaks. Its vibrant capital, Berlin, teams cultural gems like museums, monuments and memorials, with world-famous urban art and an uber-cool clubbing scene that’s one of the best in Europe.

Munich, meanwhile, takes the title of capital of Bavaria as well as the home of Oktoberfest. And Cologne combines a Rhine River location with an elegant cathedral, not to mention a festive Christmas market that draws visitors from all over the world.

If you’re planning a trip, take a look at our pick of some of the best hotels in Germany.

Sana Berlin hotel

If you want to be close to the heart of Berlin, Sana Berlin Hotel is a strong option. From here it’s a 10-minute walk to the Kurfurstendamm – the capital’s famous shopping avenue – which lines up shops and restaurants for 3.5 kilometres. And you’ve got even less of a walk to Tiergarten, the city’s vast park. Home to Berlin Zoo and some super scenic beer gardens, this place is practically on the hotel’s doorstep.

In terms of facilities, there’s a smart gym, a restaurant that serves up big buffet breakfasts and off-the-menu lunches and dinners, and a bar that spills out onto a patio for al fresco drinks. Interiors are smart and minimalistic, with sleek rooms that look out across the city. Choose a room on one of the hotel’s curved corners for a widescreen view.

Hotel Riu Plaza Berlin

Another contemporary hotel that puts you in the Kurfurstendamm shopping district, Hotel Riu Plaza Berlin is a five-minute walk from Kaufhaus des Westens – better known as KaDeWe. Second only to Harrods in size, this supersized department store packs in everything from luxury fashion to gourmet food across seven glamorous floors.

When you’re not out shopping or exploring, the hotel makes a great base. There’s a restaurant serving buffet breakfasts and light lunches, a lobby bar serving evening drinks, and a snack joint that stays open 24 hours. Rooms are smart and modern and can sleep up to four people if you choose a suite – great if you’re travelling with family or friends.

Vienna House by Wyndham Andel's Berlin

On the opposite side of the city centre, out to the east, this hotel is another good choice if you’re planning to use Berlin’s efficient public transport system. There’s a metro stop right outside and a well-connected tram station a little further down the road. You can get to Alexanderplatz – the big public square filled with shops and cafés – in about 20 minutes. Or, walk it in 45 minutes and tick off some sightseeing along the way.

You might not be in a huge hurry to leave the hotel though, thanks to its swanky Michelin-starred restaurant – Skykitchen – that fuses French, Asian and German cuisine. The cocktail bar is a similarly classy story – pull up a seat and soak up the city skyline from the huge floor-to-ceiling windows. And there’s a seriously chic spa to round things off, complete with a bio sauna, Finnish sauna and five treatment cabins.

Leonardo Hotel Munich City South, Munich

Want to explore central Munich but stay on the quieter outskirts? Put this place on your radar. It does all the basics well – smart rooms, a restaurant and bar, and an al fresco terrace. But it’s the easy access to the city centre via public transport that makes it so convenient.

There’s a bus stop right in front of the hotel and a subway stop about a 10-minute walk away, and both options will take you into the city centre. Hop on the latter and you’ll reach Marienplatz, the main square, in less than half an hour. It’s in the heart of the old town, so you’ve also got major sights like the huge Viktualienmarkt marketplace, Frauenkirche church and the Munich Residence to see.

Maritim Hotel Köln, Cologne

If a trip to Cologne is on the cards, Maritim Hotel Köln is a great choice. It manages to tick off a prime location just off the Rhine River in the heart of the action, as well as luxuries like indoor and outdoor swimming pools – a rare combination when it comes to city-centre hotels.

The hotel goes big from the second you step into the huge, glass-ceilinged lobby, which comes complete with boutique shops and even a hair salon. There’s a choice of three restaurants, each as grand as the next, as well as a sophisticated bar. And there are a range of rooms to pick from, too, including some suites that overlook the glittering Rhine and ornate city cathedral.
