Jetlag is the bane of any frequent flyer’s life – but follow our handy tips and you’ll be skipping off the plane like you’ve had 8 hours of sleep in your own bed…
Holidays whizz by quickly enough without having to waste precious time battling the nasty effects of jetlag. Take note of these tried-and-tested prevention tactics, and you’ll touch down in sunnier climes feeling like a million pounds…
With a bit of planning, you can beat jetlag at its own game. If you’re heading west, start going to bed a couple of hours later than usual a few days before you travel. But if you’re venturing east, try to turn in a bit earlier.
While we can’t promise we always practice what we preach in this case, we’re going to preach anyway. At high altitude, the dehydrating effects of alcohol and caffeine become more potent. So do yourself a favour, and save the cocktails for the beach. Repeat after us: “Water is my friend.”
We’re not talking cartwheels down the aisle, but a few gentle exercises can improve blood circulation and help to prevent stiffness. Ankle circles, shoulder rolls and arm curls can all be done in your seat – aim for a few sets every 2-3 hours. A few strolls up and down the aisle to stretch your legs can also do wonders.
First things first – set your watch or phone clock to the time of your destination as soon as you get onboard. Then try to sync your inflight naps as much as possible. If you’re landing in the evening, for instance, try not to sleep for the whole flight, or else you’ll be wide awake all night.
*Shameless plug alert*. The 787 Dreamliner is proven to help kick jetlag into touch. It’s all down to the rejigged cabin pressure and high-tech mood lighting that mimics dawn and dusk. Factor in taller ceilings and less noise, and you’re in for a much comfier flight.
Studies have shown sunshine and daylight can help regulate your body clock. So, if you touch down during the day, make a beeline for the nearest sunlounger and spend a few hours soaking up some vitamin D. Now there’s a piece of advice that shouldn’t be too hard to stick to…
