Best hotels in Portugal

You’ll find the best hotels in Portugal everywhere from the Algarve to the island of Madeira. We’ve picked out some favourites.
From golf-friendly mainland destinations to leafy Atlantic Ocean islands, Portugal packs in plenty of holiday options. Bordering Spain, this corner of Europe also clocks up around 300 days of sunshine a year – and it’s got the scene-stealing sandy beaches to match the weather.

Mainland favourite the Algarve has bagged some of the best stretches, with sandy bays and secluded coves for days. But lesser-known locations like the pretty island of Madeira deliver a different experience altogether, with mountain views, botanical gardens and beachfront hotels on the long list of reasons to visit.

We’ve picked some of the best hotels in Portugal to base yourself at – whichever part of Portugal piques your interest.

TUI BLUE Madeira Gardens, Funchal – Madiera

Flower-filled Madeira is so pretty it’s nicknamed the Floating Garden, so it’s only right that TUI BLUE Madeira Gardens is set in tropical greenery. This contemporary hotel is 10 minutes by car from Funchal – the island’s capital. And it’s adults-only, so it’s all set up for a relaxing retreat.

You get glorious sea views from the main pool as well as from the rooftop hot tub, which shares space on the terrace with one of the hotel’s four bars. The line-up also includes a cocktail bar, another with live music, and another bar next to the pool.

Themed buffets are the order of the day at the main restaurant, and Culinarium à la carte is the place to go for a romantic meal. You can also sign up for wine-tasting sessions, cocktail masterclasses and cooking courses if you fancy rustling up some culinary creations of your own.

Pestana Blue Alvor Beach, Alvor – Portugal

A 20-minute walk from the pretty fishing town of Alvor on Portugal’s mainland, Pestana Blue Alvor Beach has a lot going for it. The infinity pool is a big talking point, and it comes with impressive views out to sea. Because this hotel is set on top of a hill, you’ll find that’s the case in plenty of places around the property – from the sleek rooms to the smart restaurants.

On the subject of food, there’s a buffet restaurant serving international dishes, a pool bar with a snack buffet and a food truck near the pool whipping up hot snacks. That’s on top of two à la carte restaurants that you can dine at once a week as part of the hotel’s All Inclusive package.

Fancy eating out? Wander down to Três Irmãos beach for seafood, or head a bit further into Alvor for traditional Portuguese fare.

RIU Madeira Hotel, Canico de Baixo – Madeira

Back on the island of Madeira, RIU Madeira Hotel is another property worthy of your Portugal holiday shortlist. It’s terraced into a hillside right opposite a pebbly beach, with two pools that look straight out over the Atlantic from a roomy terrace. There’s a kids’ paddling pool, too, plus another pool indoors for the winter months.

The hotel’s food options include a buffet restaurant where you can watch your meals being prepared at live cooking stations, a grill place for snacks by the pool, and an à la carte you can dine at once per week as part of the All Inclusive set-up. You can also eat out in nearby Canico or take the free daily bus into the capital, Funchal, for your pick of Madeira’s best eateries.

Vila Gale Nautico, Armacao de Pera

If you’re keen to stay in the Algarve, Armacao de Pera is another place worth checking out. It’s home to one of Portugal’s best beaches – which racks up more than three kilometres of sand – and if you stay at Vila Gale Nautico you’re only a five-minute walk away from it. Keep walking and you’ll find a string of bars and restaurants in the town centre, or drive 20 minutes inland to explore the vast 15th-century castle at Silves.

At the hotel itself, the outdoor pool takes centre stage – and there’s a heated one indoors at the spa. You can pay extra to get massages and beauty treatment here, and there’s a gym that’s free to use. Activity-wise, tournaments on the sports court, kids’ archery lessons and fitness classes top the bill during the day, and quizzes and live music shows are on the agenda in the evenings.

ROBINSON Quinta da Ria, Tavira

Stay anywhere in The Algarve and you’re likely to have at least one golf course close by, but ROBINSON Quinta da Ria racks up two professional courses on its doorstep – Quinta de Cima & Qinta da Ria. You can sort your green fees before your trip so you can tee off on your holiday without any hassle. And thanks to the hotel’s location surrounded by a nature reserve, there are lots more options when it comes to outdoor activities – including bike hire so you can set off exploring.

Other ways to get active include the WellFit gym, which offers a mix of high-energy classes and sessions to balance the body and mind, and the WellFit spa – where you can pay a bit extra to pick from the list of treatments or take a dip in the indoor pool. The hotel’s second pool is outside, surrounded by wooden decking, neat lawns and views across the grounds – plus an all-important pool bar.
