How can I prepare for security?
Here’s a quick guide to help you move through security smoothly.
Doing these things while you're in the queue can help speed things up for everyone:
Before you reach the scanner:
-
Take off your belt (if you're wearing one)
-
Empty your pockets – put things like keys and coins into your hand luggage
-
Remove outdoor clothing, boots, or shoes with heels – you’ll need to place them in a tray
Liquids:
-
All liquids – including water, creams, lotions, perfumes, hand sanitiser, food, and lighters – must be in containers of 100ml or less
-
These must go in one clear, resealable plastic bag (max size: 20cm x 20cm / 1 litre)
-
Take this bag out of your hand luggage and place it in a tray
Electronics:
Remove large electrical items like:
-
Laptops
-
Tablets
-
E-readers
-
Hair straighteners
Place them flat in a separate tray, not stacked or covered
Make sure they are charged in case you’re asked to switch them on
Just so you know:
Some UK airports are installing new scanners
-
And may allow you to leave larger electrical items in your hand luggage
-
And may allow larger liquid containers
But for now, we recommend you follow current guidelines, especially for your return flight, as not all airports have changed, and destination airports still have restrictions.
Before you travel:
Check the rules at:
-
Your departure airport’s website
-
Any airports you’ll travel through, including your return journey
-
Check government hand luggage restrictions at UK airports and at Irish airports for details on medical and dietary liquid exceptions.
