The area around Bodrum packs in plenty of top-grade beaches, the majority of which you can reach from the town centre in 10 minutes by dolmus bus. Gumbet Beach is one of the main stars of Bodrum’s sand scene – it’s a Blue Flag number that’s decorated with couple-sized daybeds and pastel-coloured umbrellas. If watersports are more your style, Bardakci Bay lines up pedalos, kayaks and banana boats.
Uncover Bodrum’s bazaar
No town in Turkey’s complete without a bustling bazaar, and Bodrum’s is one worth shouting about. Every Tuesday, Bodrum Bazaar steals the spotlight in the town centre and offers up dozens of souvenir boutiques, jewellery stands and spice stores. There are plenty of food stalls here, too, where you can tuck in to kebabs and Turkish delight.
Amble around the old town
Bodrum’s old town feels like it was tailor made for foodies and history fans. It’s maze-like cobbled lanes are filled with tiny shops and restaurants. Plus, the area’s home to the ruins of the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus. It dates back to 350 BC, and served as a tomb for an ancient emperor and his wife. Back in the day, it was considered to be one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, before it was destroyed by earthquakes in the 12th and 15th centuries.
