Los Cancajos is a peaceful seaside town on the east coast of La Palma – a tiny Spanish island in the Canaries. It’s a laidback spot with friendly tapas restaurants along the town’s main street and relaxed waterside restaurants on the promenade. When it comes to the beach, you’ve got a triple helping of black sandy bays. In the distance, there’s the dramatic Caldera de Taburiente mountain range, and the island's capital, Santa Cruz de La Palma, is just along the coast.

Black sand beaches

The Blue Flag beach at Los Cancajos is actually made up of three different coves. There’s a boardwalk you can take to reach the furthest one from town – it’s about 10 minutes' stroll, but when you get there it’s just you and sea. The closest stretch comes with umbrellas and sunloungers. For something further afield, head to the southern tip of the island. A 30-minute drive gets you to Fuencaliente Beach – it’s a secluded place, with a seafood taverna and a towering lighthouse for company.

Daytrips to Santa Cruz de La Palma

Buses to the capital, Santa Cruz de La Palma, leave every half-hour from the main road and only take 10 minutes. The old town has the 15th-century El Salvador church, with a Renaissance façade and Mudejar-style ceiling inside. There’s also a naval museum housed in a full-scale replica of the ship that Columbus sailed to America. The chic bars and restaurants, meanwhile, are on Calle O’Daly street and the seafront promenade.
