We stayed here three years ago and have tried to return but it has been fully booked. We were lucky to be able to return in September last. It was as delightful as we remembered and we were very happy until the last day of our holiday. My wife then fell ill with a (later found out) kidney infection and was very poorly. The staff on reception arranged for a local doctor to attend (Dr Kapser of Santa Cruz) who was able to arrange for an ambulance to hospital where the attention and treatment were superb. When we returned to the Hacienda around 02.00 am, the night porter had been briefed, handed us our key (they had held the room for us) and helped us back in. Next day the reception staff assured us that we could stay as long as necessary, allowed phone use, emailed medical documents to our insurance company and provided much appreciated moral support. I cannot praise them too highly and we shall ever remember the kindness, empathy and practical help we were given by Robert, Yaiza and Selena to name but a few. Thank you all so much. By the way the re-furbished rooms are delightful.

The island itself is beautiful. Quiet in September. Lots of lovely places to eat. From our balcony we could hear only the sound of the sea at night. No drunken revellers, no music. Maybe too quiet for some? The tropical gardens that make up the grounds of the hotel and the the pool lit up at night reminded us of a 1950s film set. Absolutely unforgettable. The glass fronted reception with grand piano and marble floor is very Impressive. Room was clean and stylish. The staff were friendly. Maria at the bar deserves a special mention. Made us feel very much at home with her crazy humour. Breakfast was well organized. Everything you could want. Ten minutes from the airport. Across the road from the beach. I love a bit of nightlife, so perhaps missed that. But don't need club classics at breakfast, or hardcore house when I'm sat around the pool. Thankfully, we got peace and quiet. Perfect setting to recharge your batteries. Can't wait to go back.
A wonderful hotel close to Santa Cruz

This hotel is a real bijou! It looks more like a resort than a normal hotel. Spacious room, wonderful pool, very nice restaurant with a local food buffet facing the tropical garden. At night the piano-bar is really fantastic. And price-wise, nothing comparable: 90€ for 4 people! We’ve loved it!

I am vary uses to travel also low key. Not really sure when the room were last really cleaned. Had a huge problem with ants. There was dust everywhere. However the location is great. Very quiet. Saltwater pool a few dining options close by.
Perfect relaxing break with a 6-month old

About the hotel in general: We had a superior apartment with pool view. It was recently refurbished and beautiful. The pool was huge and lovely to swim in (24 degrees in October - it isn’t heated). The gardens were beautiful and the staff very friendly. Breakfast was lovely with a huge buffet selection. Service was friendly and efficient. I liked that they prepared a meal for us when we arrived after a late evening flight. The only negative is the dinner buffet. This was like something out of the 1970s! There were even sculptures out of cheese cubes and glacee cherries! Hilarious, but only to be tried once. Do not take the half board option. The clientele are mainly German and of retirement age with a few young families. A relaxing and respectful atmosphere. Elderly Germans do like to smoke, however! On Los Cancajos La Palma clearly struggles a bit to get tourists in, and there are signs of that in Los Cancajos with quite a large number of closed units. That aspect aside, it is a lovely resort with a stunningly dramatic rocky coast (with a lovely car-free footpath along it) and a quiet black sand beach with several rocky coves to swim in. There are a number of excellent restaurants. Our favourites were Pulpo, Sadi and Lagar. All three are exceptionally good. A huge plus point for us (and the flip side to the closed units) is that Los Cancajos remains quite underdeveloped. There are just two things next to the beach, Hacienda San Jorge and a banana plantation. Yes - Prime beachside land is still used to grow bananas! The complicated one-way system that confuses keeps out the traffic and in particular the traffic is kept well away from the beach. On staying with a baby We chose this resort as we thought it would be perfect for a stress-free holiday with a six-month old and we were not disappointed. A good quality cot was provided and the partitioned apartment and lovely balcony was perfect for evenings with the baby sleeping in the bedroom next door. The mini-supermarket in the hotel was very handy for wine and nappies and other essentials. The pool was lovely for the little one - never crowded and a good temperature in October. The gardens and animals really grabbed the babies attention. It would be possible to have a lovely holiday here and never go more than 100 metres from the hotel (to reach beach and restaurants). The grounds are a bit hilly but easy to navigate with a stroller (sometimes you need to go the long way round). Our room was up a flight of steps. If level buggy access to your room is important to you, you could request a step free room (I think about half of them are). The steps didn’t bother us. Overall it is a wonderful place and deserving of the rave reviews it gets (just leave the dinner buffet to the elderly clientele who don’t seem to mind it!)
