Valle Gran Rey holidays base you in La Gomera in the Canary Islands, where jade-green mountainside meets sapphire-blue sea.
This resort, whose name translates to ‘Valley of the Great King’, sits on the west coast of La Gomera and is made up of a collection of traditional towns and villages that cascade down the mountainside towards the Atlantic Ocean. It’s about an hour and a half’s drive from San Sebastian. Here, you can spend a day hopping between traditional shops and eateries.
Black-sand beaches are easy to come by in Valle Gran Rey. You can set eyes on some of the volcanic Canary Island sand at the likes of La Puntilla, La Playa, and the family-friendly Charco del Conde, also known as Baby Beach. When you’re not sunbathing, there’s plenty to see beneath the waves, too – the area’s a scuba diving hotspot. And the harbour in the Vueltas district is another scenic spot, complete with traditional fishing boats and seafood restaurants.
If you fancy a break from sunbathing, there’s always the hiking trails in Garajonay National Park for you to rack up some steps. This UNESCO-protected nature reserve is spread out across traditional farmed terraces and the mountainous La Gomera countryside, so the views are fantastic. Plus, you’re close to Cesar Manrique’s viewpoint, which serves up hard-to-beat vistas of the valley.
