Playa del Cura’s spot on for a Canary Islands holiday in the slow lane. This laidback town is built into the cliffs between a pair of popular Gran Canarian picks, Amadores and Puerto Rico. So, when you fancy a change from chilled days by the pool, you’ve got options. The coconut-white sand of Amadores has more to offer than sunbathing space – the water is home to some of the best dive sites on the island. And if you take a five-minute cab ride to Puerto Rico, you’ve got three huge shopping malls and an after-dark scene that’ll keep you dancing until sunrise.

A beach with the local seal of approval

This resort’s star turn is its curl of volcanic sand, which shelves gently into swimmer-friendly water. And because Playa del Cura flies under the tourist radar, you’ll have plenty of elbow room. At the weekend, it gets a little busier – this patch of sand is a magnet for locals, which is always a good sign. But you can always slope off to neighbouring Playa Tauro. This caramel-coloured beauty is virtually footprint-free and has nothing but a beachfront bar to its name.

Routes for rambling

Outdoorsy-types will be in their element here, with plenty of coastal routes for walks and hikes. Lace up your boots and follow the seafront trail along the clifftops and you’ll have panoramic views of the Atlantic. Watch out for the pint-sized, toffee-coloured coves that are tucked into the rocks. If you’re after a more challenging route, head inland and hike around the mountain-hemmed ravine between Playa del Cura and Puerto de Mogan.
