View All DealsHolidays to Esquinzo on Fuerteventuera offer up a healthy serving of relaxation, with expert-approved watersports as a side dish.
Perched on one side of Fuerteventura’s tail, Esquinzo’s a tucked-away town that lines up plenty of the Canary Islands' trademark scenery. It’s set on a tree-decked hillside, with rolling mountains rising up in the background. Look to the east, and panoramic sea views stretch out for miles. In fact, there’s nothing but ocean between you and the Western Sahara.
Playa Esquinzo’s known for its surfing credentials. Big waves are a common occurrence around these parts, so pro wave-riders flock like bees to a honeypot. For beginners, stand-up paddle-boarding and catamaran sailing in the calmer shallows are among the options – just head to the watersports hub on the sand. If you’re more of the lie-back-and-relax type, there’s plenty of powdery sand to go around – along with a beach bar for cocktail breaks in between sunbathing sessions.
Fuerteventura’s lively capital is around an hour’s drive from Esquinzo, so you’re in easy daytrip territory. It’s a pretty mix of low-slung, whitewashed houses and fluffy green trees, and home to half of the island’s population. There are plenty of shops scattered around the old town that are primed for browsing and, as a major port, boating fans will have lots of camera fodder when the cruise ships come and go.
