Prazeres holidays

Madeira

Holidays to Prazeres are set in a peaceful village on Madeira’s south coast – no wonder its name translates to ‘pleasures’.

Mountains and wildflowers

This quiet village on the southern stretch of Madeira’s like a scene from a postcard – many would even argue it’s one of the prettiest places on the island. It’s got a triple whammy of green space scattered with wildflowers, a dramatic mountain backdrop, and sweeping views over the Atlantic Ocean. And one of its most distinctive features is a little white chapel sitting on the hillside known as the Our Lady of Neves Church. There’s a mill close by that brews fresh cider, and if you want to try some, it’s sold in a tea house just a few steps from the church. Cakes and sandwiches are often on the menu, too.

Stretch your legs

Madeira’s known for its hiking routes, and when you stay in Prazeres, you’ve got easy access to a whole bunch of them. One of the trails closest to the village leads you through a forest, by one of Madeira's Levadas, to the area of Raposeira Do Logarinho. FYI, the Levadas are a network of weaving waterways that make their way across the island, through mountains and past waterfalls. The route towards Raposeira Do Logarinho isn’t too strenuous and it’s full of flora and fauna – you'll pass by fragrant eucalyptus trees and woodland valleys on your journey. The views are first class on walks like this, so be sure to pack your camera.

The island’s capital

If you fancy picking up the pace on your holiday to Prazeres, you can take a daytrip to Madeira’s capital city – it’s about 45 minutes’ drive away. Funchal’s a lively place with loads of sights to tick off your list. It’s known for its historical harbour, its patterned botanical gardens and a big collection of wine cellars. There’s a famous cable car ride, too, that gives you 360-degree views of the cityscape and out to sea. On top of all this, you’ve got all the usual staples of a capital city – think souvenir shops and plenty of bars and restaurants. If you want to eat like a local, try one of the island’s signature dishes – peixe espada – a black scabbardfish often served with banana and a custard-coloured sauce.
