Holidays to Sutomore are all about balance – you can spend equal time sightseeing, sunbathing and bar-hopping.
Sutomore and Bar are a bit like Ant and Dec. Not because they’re national treasures who set trials for celebs in the jungle, but because you rarely see one without the other. Why’s that? One – Sutomore is located in the Bar Municipality, a detail included with almost every search result when you pop its name in Google. Two – this place is just a 15-minute drive from the Old Town of Bar, the biggest archaeological site in the Balkans. That makes it a great base for ticking off sights on UNESCO’s Tentative List, like the 17th-century fortress and Stara Maslina, one of the oldest olive trees in the world.
If you thought Bar’s sights were nearby, just wait ‘til you find out what’s in Sutomore. Just outside the town centre, there’s Haj Nehaj Fortress. It’s a product of the Venetians, with time-worn walls that bump up and down grassy hills like a scaled-down version of the Great Wall of China. Hike to the top for panoramic views over the Adriatic Sea, then swing by the Church of St Tekla (or make a mental note to return once you’ve rested your legs). It’s got both Orthodox and Catholic altars, and dates back to the 1300s.
Wondering if there’s somewhere to top up your tan between sightseeing trips? You’re in luck – look at this place on the map, and you’ll see it’s right next to big patch of beige. That’s the local beach, and it’s a sand-and-pebble number backed by a lively promenade. Quieter spots aren’t hard to find, either – the rose-tinged sands of Red Beach and pine-sheltered Strbina Beach are less than a 10-minute drive away. So, you can keep things nice and chilled in the day, and save the crowds for the clubs. Sutomore’s got lots of shorefront watering holes and discos that serve loza – a local brandy, made with 100% Vranac grapes.
