Tremezzo holidays

There's a limited number of places to shop in Tremezzo, including a few casual clothing shops, souvenir shops and a speciality wine retailer.

A quiet evening stroll along the main street and down the waterfront is the best way to spend a laidback evening in Tremezzo. Grab an ice-cream from one of the local gelaterias that stay open late, to make your walk extra sweet.

For a local feel and reasonable prices, stop for after-dinner drinks at the Red & White wine bar. The views across the lake are stunning, especially when the towns are lit up at night.

Tremezzo has waterfront restaurants serving traditional Italian favourites. Local specialities like lake perch also crop up a lot in pasta and risotto dishes. The eating scene here is laidback, simple and involves lots of family-run businesses. Restaurants focus on good quality ingredients and creating a relaxed atmosphere to enjoy your meal while watching the world go by.

Cantina Follie is worth putting on your list for it's modest but impressive menu of small cold plates - perfect for when you fancy a change from pizza or pasta. The owners are extremely attentive and have a reputation for giving fantastic, friendly service. Wine is a key component here too, as the restaurant stocks a wide selection of regional Italian wines that have been carefully selected to pair beautifully with a delicious assortment of meat and cheeses.

This vibrant restaurant and bar is popular with locals. At the Red & White wine bar, you'll find large portions of tasty Italian favourites and some of the best views over the lake. The staff are helpful and friendly, and are yet another reason why customers love this place. You might even end up sharing your evening with a famous resident from down the road, as George Clooney is known to drop by for a seven-euro plate of pasta from time to time.

For a truly special evening, book yourself in to Al Veluu Ristorante. Rated as having one of the best views in the area, this place is high above Tremezzo, with sweeping views of Lake Como below. It's run by second-generation family members, whose passion and Italian hospitality can be felt the moment you arrive. Every dish is authentic and is freshly made with local produce and vegetables that are grown on-site. Advance reservations are a must.

Like most of the towns around Lake Como, there are daily bus services that run regularly. The main bus route is the C10, which will take you to Villa Carlotta and give you the freedom to visit other resorts along the route, like Menaggio and Como town.

In addition to long-distance north and south boats, in the summer months Tremezzo has a mid-lake passenger boat service that circuits every 60 minutes. It calls at Tremezzo, Lenno, Menaggio, Bellagio, Varenna and sometimes Bellano. During the peak season, the last boats to arrive at Tremezzo are at approximately 7:55pm.

The nearest train stations are Lugano (27km away), Como (30km) and Varenna Esino (4 km), which is on the opposite side of the lake, so you would need to take a ferry over.

Getting around Tremezzo on foot is pretty easy, as the village is essentially a strip along the lakefront with a few small, narrow paths leading up the hill. Walking is the best way to soak up the amazing scenery surrounding you. You've got a range of routes to choose from - a slow and pleasant stroll along the lakefront, a potter around the streets of Tremezzo town or a full-on hike up the hilly moutainsides.

Lake Como, and especially Tremezzo, is a beautiful region to explore on foot. From gentle strolls along the lakeside, to more strenuous hikes through mountainous terrain, the lake offers a whole host of memorable routes. It provides big panoramic views, pretty churches, quaint villages and a wonderful collection of flora and fauna to discover.

Catch the C10 bus to the village of Colonno and start off on the gentle 10km Greenway walk, which is marked with green road and pavement signs. You'll follow this ancient road, built by the Romans, all the way to Griante via the pretty villages of Sala Comacina, Ossucio, Lenno and Mezzegra. It will take you up and down the hills that engulf the lake, with each twist revealing another breathtaking view. Perfect for a bit of morning exercise.

Starting from the boat docks, next to the tourist information office, you'll cross the main road and take the cobblestone alley, Via Selve di Rogaro, that leads to the hamlet of Rogaro. Once you've climbed the winding path up out of Tremezzo, you'll come across a car park and picnic area. Here, signposts will guide you towards the little white church of San Martino, seemingly glued to the side of the hill, and give you some of Lake Como's best views.
