Tremezzo, Italy

Vibrant gardens bursting with colour, grand villas full of spectacular art and the romantic remains of a medieval fortress - it's no wonder holidays to Tremezzo are so popular.

Take in Tremezzo

On the western shore of Lake Como, Tremezzo is surrounded by olive and orange groves and is set against an impressive mountain backdrop. The town is well-known for the palatial villas and stunning gardens strung along its classic lakefront promenade. When you want to explore further, hop on a ferry to Bellagio, Varenna or Isola Comacina to view its churches and ruins. Follow mountain walking trails for breathtaking vistas, find a pebble beach to relax on, and swim or windsurf in the sparkling waters.

Around town

Smaller than Bellagio, Tremezzo is just as charming. The best way to explore is to head up the cobble flights of stairs set into the hillside. Winding and criss-crossing, they’ll lead you past gift shops, vaulted wine bars and romantic trattorias. Just the place to enjoy the essential Como rituals of browsing, taking in the sunshine and stopping for a cappuccino or gelato.

Visit the villas

The must-sees of Tremezzo are the villas, with the world-famous Villa Carlotta as the stand-out example. Take a tour of this 18th-century mansion to view its magnificent artwork and furnishings. Then stroll into the sprawling gardens, bursting with azaleas and camellias in summer, with a maze of winding paths, cacti and giant sequoias too. Climb the hill to the top of the gardens for spectacular views across the lake.
