View All DealsHolidays to Thassos Town take you to a Greek island that lays on pine-fringed sandy beaches, Roman ruins and seafront tavernas.
The island of Thassos sits 12 kilometres off the coast of northern Greece. And Thassos Town – known locally as Limenas – is its capital. It’s long been a Greek getaway, but it’s now firmly on the map for holidays that cleverly combine old and new. There’s a pretty port with seafront tavernas, a modern centre filled with shops and bars and, up on the hill, a Roman amphitheatre and temples.
The island’s beaches scrub up pretty well, too. In fact, there’s a duo of Blue Flag winners within striking distance of town. One of them – Palio Limani – is just behind the old harbour, a short walk from the centre. The sands here are backed by bars, cafés and restaurants, and pine trees give plenty of natural shade.
As far as nightlife goes, Thassos Town likes things busy but not too boisterous. There are plenty of cafés and lively bars thronging the seafront and dotted around the resort centre, and they usually stay open ’til 1am or 2am. And after that, there are a couple of clubs that can keep you going ’til dawn.
About an hour and a half by ferry and bus and you’re at Kavala, on the mainland. The place is dominated by its hillside castle, whose first walls were built back in the 5th century. It’s a lovely walk to get here, taking you up through the old quarter, Panagia, with its winding alleyways and traditional houses. Kavala is also home to an impressive archaeological museum.
