Archangelos holidays

Archangelos, Rhodes, Greece

Holidays to Archangelos showcase a quiet side of Rhodes, where scenic squares and family-run tavernas rule the roost.

Authentic Rhodes

Whitewashed houses, narrow lanes, traditional tavernas, the sound of church bells ringing out – this tucked-in village on Rhodes’ east coast is as Greek as it gets. There’s an away-from-it-all feel and lots of locals rather than tonnes of tourists, with its inland location helping it fly under the radar. Climb to one of the loftier parts of town, and you’ll spot olive groves and mountains for miles around, plus the Mediterranean Sea comes into the not-too-distant view.

Laidback lifestyle

Forget big-name brands and glitzy shopping malls. Walk the lanes here and you’re more likely to spot family-run tavernas and pretty plazas where locals go about their day with games of backgammon. Sightseeing’s not top of the agenda in these parts, but there are a couple of places worth checking out. The main church in the heart of the village is known for its all-white facade and 19th-century bell tower. Then there’s the Medieval castle. Most of it lays in ruins now, but it’s still worth the hilltop climb for the sweeping views over the village and the neighbouring olive groves.

Local artisans

Archangelos punches above its weight when it comes to local crafts. You’ll find family-run ceramic workshops where potters shape and paint traditional Rhodian ware, and nearby olive oil producers open their doors for tours and tastings. Most of them are small, family businesses which keep the local traditions alive.

Out and about

If you fancy venturing out for a day, there are plenty of places you can reach in under an hour. The island’s capital – Rhodes Town – is around 40 minutes’ drive away, and its harbour and Medieval city walls are well worth a visit. Lindos, meanwhile, is around half the distance away, and its whitewashed streets and hilltop Acropolis are the big attractions. For beach days, meanwhile, Stegna is the closest option. It’s around 10 minutes away by car, and it’s known for its calm waters and fish-focused tavernas along the front.
