View All DealsHolidays to Skiathos Town treat you to lazy days on sandy beaches while old-town streets, tasty Greek eats and inland monasteries turn on the traditional charm.
Skiathos Town is the smart capital of one of Greece’s Sporades Islands, Skiathos. It’s been attracting holidaymakers as well as the occasional celeb since the Sixties. In recent years this charming Aegean spot has found wider fame, alongside neighbouring Skopelos Island, in the ABBA-inspired movie Mamma Mia! With its smart harbour, cocktail bars and a bevvy of beaches, this place really is a little star.
Skiathos Town’s nearest beach is the well-sheltered Megalis Amos – just a 1.5-kilometre stroll or short bus ride away. This long, narrow sand-and-shingle beach is stocked with sunloungers, while the sea stays shallow for several metres, making it great for families and watersports newbies. Waterskiing and canoeing are favourites here. And as the island itself is just 12-by-6 kilometres, there are plenty more beaches within easy reach.
Just up from the harbour, Skiathos has an old town, where you can get a feel for traditional Greek life among the narrow alleyways. And to delve deeper into the island’s history, there’s the abandoned Medieval cliff-top town of Kastro, which comes with great views of the mainland and Skopelos. You can get there in around 30 minutes by jeep, although you’ll have to walk the last kilometre or so, or take a water taxi from the harbour.
