Hidden coves, picturesque harbour, and daytrips to Myrtos Beach
Agia Efimia is a little slice of traditional Greece. The tavernas here serve some of the best Kefalonian meat pie around, while the nearby coast is sprinkled with idyllic beaches. And world-famous Myrtos Beach is just 15 minutes’ drive away.
A lot of the village’s buildings were destroyed by an earthquake in the Fifties. When it came to the rebuild, officials called on French architects and builders to lend a hand. It means the harbour today has a real French Riviera feel – cue pastel-painted houses, with bougainvillea spilling from the balconies.
Sitting on Kefalonia’s east coast, Agia Efimia puts you in a handy spot for daytrips. Boats ferry holidaymakers across to Kefalonia’s neighbour, Ithaka, so you can swap one peaceful island for another. And a 15-minute drive will deliver you to Myrtos Beach, which features in blockbuster, Captain Corelli’s Mandolin.
