Holidays to Piskopiano Village dish up a slice of real Crete. You get awe-inspiring views, plenty of authentic tavernas – and sandy beaches close by.
This traditional village sits on the slopes of a green hillside in north-eastern Crete. It’s a small, tranquil place, but it still packs in lots of authentic tavernas, not to mention a beautiful 16th-century church. The village overlooks the lively town of Hersonissos, so you’ve got easy access to the bright lights – not to mention the beautiful blue Aegean Sea and the sandy beaches that dot the coast.
The nearest beaches are 5 minutes’ drive away at Hersonissos – it’s a 3-for-1 deal with a trio of sandy beaches around the town. Star Beach is the local favourite. There’s a quieter stretch at Anissaras, 10 minutes’ drive from Piskopiano. It’s got sunloungers and umbrellas, but there’s a more laid-back vibe here – and the little rock pools along the shore are great for children.
The historic city of Heraklion is a 25-minute drive away. A highlight is the huge 13th-century fortress along the water – it’s remarkably intact, and you can take a tour around the fortified stone walls. A short stroll away is the Agios Minas Cathedral, an opulent building with original murals inside. It’s close to Lion's Square, a cute little meeting-spot with cappuccino bars around the edges that do a nice line in bougatsa – Heraklion-style éclairs.
