Quintessential Greece

On Crete’s north coast, between Rethymnon and Heraklion, is where you’ll find Panormo. It’s a petite fishing village, with bags of traditional Greek appeal. Cue a dainty harbour where waterfront tavernas serve the catch of the day, and cobblestone streets lined with pavement cafés, known as kefenions.

His and hers beaches

Two sandy beaches service the Panormo coastline. Limani Beach is the most central, situated right in front of the village, where the water's clear and shallow. Then there’s the bigger West Panormo Beach, an arc-shaped cove with equally see-through waters that’s just a short seafront stroll from the centre of town.

Quiet nights and historical sights

During the day, you can drive to Crete's most popular tourist attraction, the Palace of Knossos, in an hour. The prehistoric town of Eleftherna's just a half-hour drive inland, too. Here, archaeologists discovered a mysterious golden eye, identical to those on the Egyptian King Tutankhamun’s burial mask. After dark, you can count on harbourfront tavernas, where waiters will bring drinks to your candlelit table on the terrace. If you're looking to up the ante, Rethymnon’s main strip is a 20-minute drive away.

A hit with history buffs

You can’t come to Crete without taking a peek at the Palace of Knossos. This royal complex was built thousands of years ago, way before Rome’s Colosseum even had a blueprint. It was home to the powerful King Minos, and is full of tales of Theseus and the Minotaur. You’ll find it just outside of Crete’s capital, Heraklion, an hour’s drive away.
