Finnish Lapland, tucked deep inside the Arctic Circle, is prime territory for memory making. Think meet-and-greets with Santa, riding a snowmobile, and even spotting the elusive Northern Lights. Find out when to go to make the most of your time there…

When to see Santa

When to see the Northern Lights

During the winter months, darkness falls at around 3pm in Lapland – so, on a clear night, you can expect excellent visibility of the Northern Lights without having to stay up way past your bedtime. For the best chance of seeing them, book a three or four-night trip so you have plenty of time to explore and spot the colourful show in the sky. And, it’s not just about standing in awe and watching either. You can take a night-time snowmobile trip to get right into the heart of the forest. Don’t feel like braving the cold? Catch the Northern Lights at a special 3D screening at the Arktikum science museum.

When to go for snow-filled fun

The snow can arrive as early as October and stay until around May, so you're likely to have a white Christmas. And there are loads of winter activities to try – snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, sleigh rides, and even snowshoe walks. You’ll get about three to four hours of light a day during December and January, but all activity areas are well lit, so there’s nothing stopping you from getting stuck into outdoor fun.
