Mexico’s weather is reflective of its Caribbean address. In summer, the mercury flits between the high-20s and the mid-30s, and even in the winter months you can expect temperatures to top 28°C. There’s a little more rain in the summer months, between June and October, but it’s usually just an hour or two in the evening – the rest of the time it’s blue skies and sunshine. Mexico does see the occasional hurricane between July and October, but they’re pretty rare, and hotels are well prepared if a storm does occur. Mexico experiences high levels of humidity throughout the year, with June to August being especially high. We would advise you to leave windows and balcony doors closed as much as possible to make the most of the air-con and reduce humidity levels hotel rooms. And while we’re on the subject of hotels, you may find that some facilities, such as restaurants and bars, aren’t available from late April to May and from mid-August to mid-November, but there’ll be enough open so you can still enjoy your stay.

When travelling to Mexico, visitors are required to pay three different taxes. Departure tax is the largest and this has already been included in the cost of your holiday. The Environmental Tax and Tourist Tax must be paid locally before you travel home. If you are travelling to Puerto Vallarta you will not be required to pay these additional two taxes. Environmental Tax should be paid at the hotel when checking in or checking out and costs between 30-140 MXN per room, per night. You should pay the Tourist Tax through the official website and currently this costs 293 MXN per person, including all children and infants. Please only use this website as it has been reported that fraudulent sites are active. Proof of payment must be given at the airport, so once you've paid the tax please download and take a screenshot of the QR confirmation to minimise delays when travelling home.
You should take out comprehensive travel and medical insurance to cover you while you’re away. For the latest health and safety information, visit the FCDO website.
