Holidays to Poste Lafayette tick along in slow motion. It's got a couple of off-the-radar beaches, plus a national park in the background.
Poste Lafayette is a barely-there village on the north-east coast of Mauritius. It’s made up of a string of seafront houses and hotels, so ticks the box for away-from-it-all breaks. You’ve got beaches where seclusion trumps everything, plus a national park that’s checkerboarded with volcanic wildlife walks, wetlands and dense patches of jungle.
Open countryside spans out behind Poste Lafayette, and there’s a portion that stands out from the crowd. Bras d’Eau National Park covers more than a thousand acres of land, and has everything from rocky volcanic trails to wetlands and jungle canopies. You can see rare giant Mauritian ebony trees here, plus multi-coloured geckos and native birds called paradise flycatchers.
There are two beaches to pick from – both are long slivers of white sand, with lava stones in the shallows and a belt of trees over their shoulder. If you want to deviate from sunbathing and swimming, the off-shore coral reef makes an excellent snorkelling spot. Sports fans, meanwhile, make a beeline for the town across the bay – Poste de Flacq. It’s home to the island’s top golf courses, which spread out right beside the shoreline.
