The waterfront city of Fethiye offers up a mix of old and new. Almost all of it was rebuilt after a devastating earthquake hit in the 1950s, and it’s continued to expand into a real cosmopolitan gem. The shore here’s lined with fashion boutiques, cocktail bars and gourmet restaurants, while the old town – Paspatur – is all souvenir shops and spice-filled markets. The old town’s also a few streets away from another of the city’s mainstays – the Fethiye Museum. This gallery’s filled with 5,000-year-old artefacts, some of which date back to the Bronze Age.
Ovacik, on the other hand, is a laidback village that’s hunkered in the hills near the town of Olu Deniz. The latter’s famous for its location next to the UNESCO-protected Blue Lagoon, one of Turkey’s top attractions. Here, you can relax on sandy swathes that regularly top the polls of the world’s best beaches, and give plenty of watersports a go – the area’s known for its first-rate snorkelling. You can get there in a 15-minute drive from Ovacik’s restaurant-and-taverna-dotted centre.
