With a combination of Berber, Arab, Jewish and African influences, Djerba offers a real mix of things to do. We’ve pulled out our top-three must-sees to get you started, but there are plenty more.
1. Head to the beach
Djerba’s number-one attraction for holidaymakers has to be its coastline. But with so much sand to go round, where do you start? Sidi Mahres is Djerba's big-name beach. It runs uninterrupted for 13 kilometres from Taguermes Lighthouse in the east, all the way to Flamingo Point in the north, and it’s fringed by warm, shallow water.
2. Visit Houmt Souk
Djerba’s capital and main city makes a great daytrip destination from the beach, and thanks to the island’s compact size you won’t spend hours travelling there. Shop at its colourful markets, see local life in action at the fishing port and visit the 16th-century fortress, Borj el Kebir – which you can explore for around 7 Tunisian dinar, or less than £2.
3. Wander around Djerbahood
This neighbourhood in the village of Erriadh has been transformed into an open-air museum with around 250 murals. It’s the work of international artists from all over the world, and the contrast of bright contemporary art against a backdrop of traditional whitewashed buildings is really striking – especially in the early hours as the village wakes up.
