Best time to visit the Dominican Republic

Caribbean calling you? Get the inside scoop on when to book your Dominican Republic getaway.
A toe-sinking coastline, pristine national parks and heaps of UNESCO-rated sights to soak up – with this line-up, it’s always a good time to visit the Dominican Republic if you ask us. From April to December, it’s textbook Caribbean island weather – think clear skies, sorbet sunsets and no sight of rain. Even in the rainy season – from late May to late November – there’s much more than beaches to enjoy. Whether you want to celebrate Santo Domingo’s Carnival in spring or snorkel around Punta Cana’s shore come summer, read on for the lowdown on the best time to go.

When is high season?

Just like other Caribbean islands, the Dominican Republic’s high season falls between mid-December and mid-April – cue the hottest months. The temps hover between 21ºC in the morning and 28ºC in the afternoon (hello, sunbathing), plus the humidity is low – perfect for hiking the pine forest hills of the north. Oh, and if you’re into water sports like snorkelling, diving and windsurfing, the high season has just the right weather conditions. We’re talking warm sea temps and a balmy sea breeze – blisss.

When is rainy season?

Summer – late May to November – is the season of the showers in the Dominican Republic. Don’t worry, though, your holiday won’t be a washout. The good news is the rain doesn’t stick around for long. By the afternoon, it's normal service (wall-to-wall sunshine) resumed. This time of year is often quieter and kinder on the purse strings, too. There are fewer crowds to contend with, hotels are less busy, and activities are often cheaper – a win-win if you ask us.

When is hurricane season?

June kicks off hurricane season in the Dominican Republic, which lasts until November. In August and September, you’re more likely to see stormy weather, but that doesn’t mean the holiday blues set in – there’s loads to enjoy away from the coconut coast at this time of year. The rain tends to fall in the afternoon here, so morning hikes in the southwest (places like Barahona) or exploring culture-rich cities like Santiago inland are great additions to your holiday itinerary.
