How to get the latest travel advice

Find out how to get the latest travel advice.

Check out these top five tips – in collaboration with the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) Travel Aware campaign – to be in the know before you get away…

Here at TUI, we love to focus on the exciting bits of going on holiday. The anticipation in the lead-up to your flight, setting that out of office and doing exactly what you want, when you want, while you’re away. But it’s really important to think about the practicalities too, and get prepared before you go – and we don’t just mean refining your packing technique so you can fit that extra swimsuit in your case. We work closely with the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) on their Travel Aware campaign, which is all about making sure travellers are equipped with all the information they need to keep them safe, and make sure that they have an amazing time on holiday. We’ve put together a list of five top travel tips, to make it easy for you to get in the know and ready to go…

1. Make visiting the FCDO’s travel advice site part of your holiday research

As well as looking at dreamy photos of cotton-white beaches and scouring the web for the best hotels and destination must-dos, checking the FCDO travel advice for your destination should play a big part in your holiday research. It’s got all the information you need to make an informed decision about where you’d like to go, before you hit the book button. We’re talking everything from passport and visa information to getting an idea of the local customs of the destinations on your ‘maybe’ list. Plus, you can make the most of handy tools, like the before-you-go checklist.

2. Follow the Travel Aware social channels and sign up for email alerts for the latest updates

We know things can change after you book, which is why it’s important to make sure you’re up to speed with the latest travel advice. Travel Aware makes it really easy, too. Just follow their social channels – @FCDOtravelGovUK on Twitter, FCDO Travel on Facebook, and @travelaware on Instagram. Here, they regularly post updates on situations that have the potential to affect travellers. Plus, you can sign up to their email alerts to get these updates directly into your inbox. Just select ‘Get email alerts’ on any destination page you’re interested in.

3. Take out travel insurance when you book

…and make sure it covers you for your whole trip and covers your planned holiday activities. It might be tempting to put off sorting your travel insurance until the last minute, but it’s always better to get it done before you book. That way, your holiday’s covered from the outset, so if your circumstances change before you travel, your insurance has got your back. Travel Aware has all the details on travel insurance, why it’s so important, and what you should look for in a policy. Have a read of their take on it.

4. For everything health-related, visit Travel Health Pro

They’ve got all the latest on everything from vaccination recommendations for each country, to outbreaks that might affect travellers. On their website, you’ll also find some really helpful information on the likes of avoiding insect bites and staying safe in the sunshine. If you’re worried about anything, Travel Health Pro recommends making an appointment with your GP at least four to six weeks before you’re due to set off, to talk it through and get some advice.
