Heading to Phu Quoc? Here's what to do while you're there.
Just an hour’s flight from Ho Chi Minh City, Phu Quoc is Vietnam’s biggest island. It’s still under the tourist radar for now, but it won’t be for long – so it’s the perfect time to visit. Full of charming locals and offering a taste of Vietnamese culture – visit a fish sauce factory or pepper farm during your trip – there’s plenty to keep you busy. Or, you can choose to find a hammock in the sun on one of the island’s beautiful beaches. TRY NEW FOODS AT THE NIGHT MARKET

For a taste of authentic Asian culture, head to Duong Dong for Phu Quoc’s Night Market. It’s a hive of activity open every evening, and is visited by tourists and locals alike for eating, shopping, and socialising. You can try local delicacies like fresh seafood, Vietnamese pizza, and French-inspired Bánh mì – baguettes stuffed with pork, pâté, and pickled vegetables. Once you’ve satisfied your taste buds, browse for souvenirs including local crafts, jewellery, and clothing. And, make sure you visit Dinh Cau Rock in the fishing harbour next door – it’s home to Cau Temple, which was built in the early 20th century.

VISIT PINEAPPLE ISLAND

The Hon Thom Cable Car flaunts social-media-worthy views of tiny fishing villages and bright green jungle. Strung across the island’s southern tip, it’s the longest non-stop, three-rope gondola in the world. The 15-minute journey takes you to Phu Quoc’s second largest land mass, Hon Thom, also known as Pineapple Island. Hop on the cable car at sunset and you’ll be treated to impressive views of calm waters studded with fishing boats. It’s definitely worth the trip if you’re visiting Phu Quoc.

STRETCH OUT ON THE BEACHES

When it comes to beaches, Phu Quoc has a lot to brag about. There’s Sao Beach, known locally as Bai Sao, which has plenty of soft white sand to sink into, plus hammocks and spots to try local food. Long Beach, meanwhile, has a handful of beach resorts hidden in the surrounding jungle. Once you’ve made it to this quiet stretch, put your feet up at one of the beach bars, or treat yourself to a massage with a sea view. Then, there’s the beautiful beach of Rach Vem in Ganh Dau. If you’re lucky, you’ll spot starfish sunbathing in the surf. It’s also a great spot to tie in with a trip to Phu Quoc National Park, which is just half an hour’s drive away.

CHECK OUT THE LOCAL NIGHTLIFE

Phu Quoc nightlife is all about kicking back at a beach bar. Rory’s Bar is a local hotspot, offering up live music and beach bonfires every evening from November to March. Just up the coast is Sunset Bar, where you can grab a cocktail and watch the sun go down over the beach. If you fancy dressing up, head south to check out the Chemistry Bar at the JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay. The luxury resort is university themed throughout, and the bar – which is open to the public – overlooks the palm tree lined beach.
