Best hidden gems to visit in Spain
In fact, visiting off-season – to explore the snowy mountains of the Sierra Nevada, or soak up the winter festivals of Andalucia, for example – can help to take the strain off things in Spain during the busier parts of the year. It means smaller crowds for you, more breathing space for local communities, and more balance for restaurants, bars and big-name attractions.
The same applies to visiting lesser-known places every once in a while. Go off the beaten track a bit – to an area or a beach that’s a bit more low-key – and not only are you getting a more authentic experience, but you’re helping to spread the love a bit in the process.
Need some inspiration to decide on what sights should you tick off while you’re there? Whether you’re after some art and culture, nature, or just something a bit different, we’ve got you covered. Have a read and start making your must-see list.
Get your beach fix on the Costa de la Luz, Spain
The Costa de la Luz, in Andalucia, takes a much more au-naturale approach to beach life. The sand is mostly backed by traditional towns and sleepy villages. And a stay here puts you within easy reach of cities like Jerez, where you can get a taste of Spain beyond the shoreline – complete with dimly lit flamenco bars, tucked away sherry joints and Moorish-inspired architecture.

Go stargazing at Roque de los Muchachos, La Palma
One of the island’s best starry spots is the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory. You’ll find this place on La Palma’s tallest peak, and you can tour the observatory for a look inside one of their telescopes. Head outside the observatory on a clear night, and you’ll have an uninterrupted view of the stars – make sure you wrap up warm, though.

Hike or ski the Sierra Nevada, Spain
As well as being popular with hikers, this area’s also a winner for skiers. The Sierra Nevada Ski Station is Europe’s most southerly ski resort if you fancy hitting the slopes.

Find peace and quiet on the island of Formentera
The take-it-easy vibe carries on beyond the beach, too. Spend an unhurried afternoon browsing the El Pilar de la Mola hippie markets, or explore sleepy San Francisco, the island’s capital. Plus, evenings sipping cocktails are on the cards in Es Pujols’ sleek set of bars.
