Best hotels in Rome

Heading to Rome? The best hotels put you right in the heart of this epic Italian city.
Whether you’ve set your heart on seeing Vatican City, snapping a selfie on the Spanish Steps or spending your life savings on Via Veneto (or indeed, all three) finding the perfect hotel in Rome is all about location. Stay somewhere that’s within easy reach of the city’s most important sights and you’ll spend less time travelling from A to B and more time sightseeing.

But the best hotels in Rome go one step further than just a centre-of-it-all location, with extra features to really make your trip unforgettable. We’re talking rooftop bars with city vistas, elegant interiors with Italian flair, and sophisticated restaurants with some of the best cuisine Italy has to offer. You’ll find all of the above at the best hotels in Rome, and we’ve picked out our top five to get you started.

When you’re ready, check out all our Rome holidays.

Grand Hotel Palace

The Trevi Fountain is one of those must-see sights in Rome, and Grand Hotel Palace puts you within striking distance of this 18th-century gem. It’s on the corner of Via Veneto, about a 15-minute walk from the fountain and the iconic Spanish Steps. The Villa Borghese is close by, too, not to mention a collection of designer shops and upmarket restaurants that draws an A-list crowd.

The hotel is as elegant as you’d hope from such a well-heeled address, with high ceilings, fresco-decorated walls and chandeliers featuring heavily. Bedrooms are super-smart and kitted out in a more modern style, and the restaurant’s leafy terrace is a hotel highlight.

NH Collection Roma Fori Imperiali

If the Colosseum is on your itinerary in Rome, NH Collection Roma Fori Imperiali should be on your hotel shortlist. It’s a 10-minute walk away from the ancient amphitheatre, and you can get to the Pantheon in the same amount of time. There’s plenty of history right on the doorstep, too, with views of the Roman Forum from practically every window.

Style-wise, this place has a boutique feel – neutral tones and feminine flourishes create a calming feel throughout. The à la carte restaurant – Oro Bistrot – has a menu designed by a famous Italian chef, and the rooftop cocktail bar on the terrace has incredible widescreen city views.

Residenza Paolo VI

Once an Augustinian monastery, Residenza Paolo VI is a stone’s throw from St Peter’s Square – right next to Vatican City. So if a visit to the world’s smallest state is on the cards, this is a pretty cool place to base yourself.

You’ll get an amazing view of St Peter’s Basilica and the Apostolic Palace from the hotel’s rooftop terrace – a shaded haven in the heat of the day, with pretty flower boxes and classical music that adds to the overall ambience. You can take afternoon tea here, too, and there’s a breakfast room where you can fill up on a buffet spread – the perfect way to kick off a day of exploring.

Roma Luxus Hotel

Another hotel that over-delivers on location, Roma Luxus Hotel is a short walk from Trajan's Market. This huge complex of ruins looks out over the Via dei Fori Imperiali, the road that runs between Piazza Venezia and the Colosseum – so you’ve got a long list of A-grade sights on the doorstep.

The property itself has had a recent refurbishment, so everywhere from the rooms to the restaurants looks fresh and modern. Speaking of the restaurant, it’s a bright and airy space with floor-to-ceiling windows, loads of indoor greenery and an inviting outdoor terrace – the perfect place to sip an Aperol spritz.

Unahotels Decò Roma

If you’re planning to explore a bit further afield while you’re in town, Unahotels Decò Roma is a well-connected option. It’s right next to Roma Termini, the city’s main train station, so Rome – and beyond – is your oyster.

Having said that, there’s plenty on the doorstep that’s walkable if you’re sticking closer to home. Santa Maria Maggiore, Rome’s biggest church dedicated to the Virgin Mary, is a five-minute walk from the hotel, and the Colosseum and Roman Forum are another 15 minutes away. Back at base, a café-cum-lounge bar serves cocktails and snacks, and the main restaurant is the place to head for Continental spreads at breakfast and Italian specialities at dinner.
