First up, the gateway to Africa. Holidays to Morocco promise diverse landscapes – from sandy beach resorts to the shape-shifting dunes of the Sahara Desert. You’ve got maze-like Marrakech, with its sprawling souks filled with spices in every colour of the rainbow. Plus, the ancient section of the city, known as the Medina, has been given the nod by UNESCO. Elsewhere, Agadir’s the place to go if you’re after beaches. THE GAMBIA

The Gambia may be small, but it gets a big thumbs up for a holiday jam-packed with sun, sea and smiles. Not to mention it has year-round temperatures of over 30 degrees, while conveniently having the same time zone as the UK. Head to Bao Bolong Wetland Reserve to spot the likes of monkeys, leopards, hyenas and rare birds in the wild. More of a beach lover? This part of Africa, nicknamed the Smiling Coast, packs in loads of sandy swathes – from the honey-hued sands in Cape Point to the rocky coves and fishing-focussed beaches in Bakau.

SENEGAL

Senegal’s putting its name on the map, with sun-splashed beaches, six national parks and cities packed full of culture. The UNESCO-listed city of Saint Louis has a rich history, which is reflected in its colonial architecture at spots like the iconic Faidherbe Bridge – a 19th-century landmark with ties to Gustave Eiffel. Sandy beaches are on the cards here, too. Head to Saly or Pointe Sarene for palm-fringed stretches lapped by balmy waters, up-market restaurants and watersports activities.

CAPE VERDE

Think Cape Verde, think powdery sands and bright-blue waters. It’s located off the west coast of Africa and is made up of 10 islands floating in the Atlantic Ocean. Escape to the tiny island of Sal to zoom over Mars-like landscapes on quad bikes and float in salt lakes at Pedra de Lume. Santa Maria, meanwhile, is the place to go for nightlife, thanks to the tonnes of themed bars and clubs that call this place home. The other island you can head to is Boa Vista – which translates to ‘beautiful view’. It’s the perfect setting to kick back and recharge your batteries. You can relax on Santa Monica Beach here, or cruise around the coast looking for humpback whales.
