Best hotels in Italy

From Sorrento to Sardinia, Italy lines up an impressive list of must-visit hotels. We’ve whittled down some of our favourites.
Whether you’ve got your eye on a specific area or you’re casting your holiday net wide, Italy lines up a long list of places to stay. Home to well-heeled cities like Rome and Milan, this European heavyweight certainly knows how to do luxury – and it has the five-star hotels to prove it.

But for every A-list pad there’s a rustic bolthole where R&R reigns supreme. So, we’ve picked out some of our favourite Italian hotels, from relaxed adults-only escapes to all-singing, all-dancing, All Inclusive family options. Take a look and see which one ticks all your Italy holiday boxes…

TUI MAGIC LIFE Calabria, Pizzo – Calabria

Calabria may be a relatively quiet corner of Italy – it’s the undiscovered toe of the country’s boot – but the line-up at TUI MAGIC LIFE Calabria is anything but sleepy. For starters, it has 11 tennis courts, a watersports centre, a kids' splash park and its own beach.

Pool-wise, there’s one dedicated to activities like aqua dance and water polo, and quieter options for when you fancy something a little more sedate. That includes an adults-only number that’s exclusive to guests who’ve upgraded to the Private Lodge area.

Elsewhere, the list of activities covers things like family sports, mountain bike tours and archery tournaments for over-16s. There are activities for kids from three years old to teens, and adults can pay a bit extra to make the most of the lengthy treatment list at the spa.

As you’d expect from such an action-packed place, the dining scene is second to none. Work your way around a selection of restaurants including Magico, a big buffet number with live cooking stations and themed nights. This place is 24-hour All Inclusive: permission to fill your boots.

TUI Suneo La Conchiglia Resort & Spa, Capo Vaticano – Calabria

Another Calabrian gem on our shortlist, TUI Suneo La Conchiglia Resort & Spa is wrapped in greenery – so things here feel pretty secluded. The same applies to the area around it, which is all sprawling vineyards and olive groves peppered with traditional towns and villages. Factor in the adults-only tag, and relaxation is very much on the agenda.

This place is All Inclusive, so you can fill up at two restaurants serving Italian and Mediterranean dishes. There’s a bar at the main pool, plus the hotel puts on live music acts a couple of nights a week.

There’s also a second pool in the gardens, and you can wander down to the beach to take a dip. This sandy stretch is a five-minute walk away, or you can take the hotel shuttle. There’s a lido and a beach club on the seafront, so it’s well worth the trip.

TUI BLUE Nastro Azzurro, Sorrento – Campania

The second Sorrento hotel on our must-visit list, the adults-only TUI BLUE Nastro Azzurro really goes to town with its Bay of Naples views. The best place to soak them up is from the main pool, but the whirlpool baths on the sun terrace are a close second, and there are plenty more vantage points to pick from.

All our TUI BLUE hotels promise live cooking, regional flavours and a choice of à la carte restaurants, and this place is no exception. The international buffet is the hub of all the foodie action, and freshly cooked pizzas are served at the poolside eatery.

As for drinks, the Sunset Bar hosts live music and local dancers in the evenings, and you can try wine tasting sessions and cocktail masterclasses during the day. Plus, the hotel runs a free shuttle bus into the centre of Sorrento for when you fancy exploring – the journey takes less than half an hour.

Janna e Sole, Olbia – Sardinia

For a twist on the traditional Italian experience, set your sights on Sardinia. The island – the second biggest in the Mediterranean Sea – floats well off the coast of the mainland. It’s known for a string of luxurious spots, like Olbia, home to the Emerald Coast.

The Janna e Sole hotel puts you within easy reach of Olbia – it’s in the pretty town of Budoni, about a 30-minute drive from the city centre. You can pay to take the shuttle bus there on certain days of the week, as well as other destinations like Porto Ottiolu, with its restaurant-lined harbour.

There are lots of reasons to stay back at base, though, including three pools, a kids' pool, and massage rooms you can pay extra for. And food and drinks are well covered – this is still part of Italy, after all – with a restaurant, snack bar and wine bar. All Inclusive meals are served up at the main buffet spot, so you can help yourself to cold antipasto favourites, pasta, pizza and international fare.
