This small town keeps things laidback, while still being within striking distance of all the action. Walt Disney World Resort’s only half an hour’s drive away, so you won’t have to trek far to catch a parade at Magic Kingdom Park, eat your way around the world at EPCOT, and see movie action come to life at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. A little further afield – but still only around 45 minutes away by car – you’ve got the thrills and spills of Universal Studios™, Universal's Islands of Adventure™ and Universal's Volcano Bay™.

On the water

This neck of the woods is sprinkled with lakes, so swimming, fishing and boating are popular picks between days at the theme parks. If you fancy spying some of the Sunshine State’s native wildlife, you can hop on a boat and venture into a swamp in search of alligators, herons and kingfishers. Or, try and spot them from the comfort of your car on the Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive. This 11-mile route’s just over half an hour away, and takes about two hours to complete.

Time to tee off

This part of Florida’s home to a bevy of golf courses, including the famous ChampionsGate, which is about 45 minutes’ drive from Clermont. You’ve got not one but two 18-hole courses to practice your swing on here, both designed by accomplished architect and golfer, Greg Norman. They might be just down the road from Walt Disney World Resort, but these well-pruned greens feel worlds away from the rides – they’re sprinkled with tranquil lakes and palm trees.

Eating, drinking and shopping

There are more shopping centres and malls here than there are days of the week, so if you fancy giving your wallet a workout, you’re in luck. The restaurant line-up has something for everyone, too, from all-American steakhouses to Italian spots and Mexican places. If all that’s not enough, you’re 40 minutes by car from International Drive, which dishes out more of the same, plus the likes of adventure golf, escape rooms and a huge observation wheel.
