Dallas holidays

Dallas, Texas, USA

City breaks to Dallas deal in urban art galleries, a famous autumn state fair, and Tex-Mex flavours – plus, it’s the birthplace of the frozen margarita.

City breaks to Dallas

The third largest city in the state of Texas, and the ninth biggest city in all of the USA – say howdy to Dallas, where holidays are in the ‘go hard or go home’ category. We’re talking thousands of restaurants, art galleries by the dozen, and shops to splurge in from dawn until dusk. And it’s not all slick city vibes. The urban pulse is diluted with Texan charm in the form of cowboy culture, country music and a huge local love for American football – cue the aptly named Dallas Cowboys. The city’s also home to the world-famous State Fair of Texas, which runs from September to the end of October every year, and features rides, food, concerts, and livestock shows.

A hub for urban art

Dallas features the largest urban arts district in the USA. In fact, its arts scene has exploded like a can of rainbow paint in the last decade, spilling into all corners of the city in the form of street murals, design centres, galleries and community storytelling groups. It’s full of influences from musical culture, especially blues and rock, as well as Latino and southern artistic voices. But where to find it all? Head to the Deep Ellum neighbourhood for the heart of Dallas’ street art. Every corner bursts with murals, from massive portraits and abstract pieces to graffiti‑inspired work. It’s basically an open‑air gallery. The area known as The Cedars, meanwhile, showcases large‑scale murals, warehouse art, and creative studios that pour their personality onto the streets. And downtown, you’ll find public art projects and sculptures at every turn.

Full calendar in Dallas

No matter what time of year you saddle up for a trip to Dallas, each season comes up with the goods when it comes to events. Spring plays host to the floral festival Dallas Blooms at the Arboretum, while summer ticks off the Fourth of July Fireworks at Fair Park, as well as the city-wide Taste of Dallas food festival. Autumn takes gold for the State Fair of Texas – the city’s biggest annual event, with a focus on Texan culture, livestock competitions and country music concerts. And come winter, there’s an annual holiday parade with festive floats, as well as a major fireworks show to welcome in each new year.

Take the path most-trodden

Of course, as a tourist in the city, you’ll likely want to ogle some of Dallas’ main tourist sights while you’re here. Microphone-shaped Reunion Tower’s a perfect pick for a bird’s eye view – we recommend heading up to the observation area on the GeO-Deck at night to see Dallas sparkle with neon lights. This tower’s in the downtown area, which is also where you’ll find Dealey Plaza – one of the most historically significant places in Dallas, because it’s where President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963.

Top things to see and do in Dallas

Shopping

Bargain buys

It’s easy to find a budget souvenir to take home in Dallas. This place is in barbecue country, and locally made spicy or sweet sauces make great, easy‑to‑pack gifts. Downtown, you can also get your hands on keyrings, t-shirts, fridge magnets and ornaments, all featuring longhorn cattle, which is one of Texas’ most famous state symbols.

Mid-range buys

Nothing says, “I’ve been on holiday to Texas” like buying a real-life cowboy hat. And you’ll find no end of shops in Dallas where you can buy one. A proper Stetson can set you back anywhere between $150 and over $400 – it depends where they’re made and from what material, whether it’s leather, felt, straw or wool.

Designer buys

Dallas Cowboys merch often comes with the biggest price tag when it comes to Dallas-specific souvenirs. The official NFL‑licensed gear can cost you a pretty penny, but going home with a hoodie, a sweatshirt or a jersey gives you major bragging rights. Check out the NFL shop sales or any seasonal discounts for the lowest prices.

Nightlife

Laid-back evenings

Mellow cocktail haunts, craft beer-centric bars, rooftop patios and hotel wine lounges all make for a chilled evening out. Dinner and drinks with a view of the city skyline also eliminate the chaos of a clubbing night out. Then there’s Dallas’ strong late‑night foodie scene – it’s perfect if your idea of nightlife is grabbing a bite after a show or a walk.

Lively evenings

For a fun night out, go full-Texas and put on a Stetson, then make your way to a country night at a Dallas dance hall like the Longhorn Ballroom. Attracting locals and tourists in equal measure, a country night ticks off two-stepping and line dancing to a live band in a casual jeans-and-boots atmosphere.

Food & drink

Frozen margarita

Fun fact – the frozen marg cocktail was invented in Dallas, by high-school dropout Mariano Martinez. He opened his own hacienda-style restaurant, then invented the perfect recipe for the chilly take on the classic margarita. You can raise a frosted glass of tequila, lime juice, orange liqueur and slushy ice in many bars in Dallas, including the original Mariano's bar.

Tex-Mex

The influence of Tex-Mex – a blend of Mexican foodie traditions and Texas ingredients – is deeply woven into the fabric of Dallas’ food culture. Iconic dishes like sizzling fajitas, hearty enchiladas, and hard-shell tacos appear across the menus of many Tex-Mex restaurants in the city. Yellow cheddar cheese, cumin seasoning, and ground beef are the staples of this fusion of cultural tastes.

Barbecue meats and steaks

Barbecue is classed as one of Dallas’s main food groups, and it’s famous for slow‑smoked brisket, ribs and sausages. Steak is also an-easy-to-find meat here, and you’ll come across it in both high-end and more affordable restaurants across the city.

Craft beer

Dallas flaunts a booming craft beer hub, with dozens of breweries producing a wide range of styles and flavours. Beer geeks will love a visit to a brewer like the Craft and Growler – one of Dallas’ first craft beer bars – and the Pegasus City Brewery, which has authentic Texan taproom vibes.

Corny Dogs

For a real taste of traditional Dallas, you’ll want to time your visit to coincide with the State Fair of Texas in September or October. Here, you’ll find a food van with Fletcher’s Original Corny Dogs painted on the side – and boy, do these corndogs pack a punch with flavour. What you’ll get is a deep-fried hotdog on a stick, made from a recipe that’s barely been altered since 1942. The Veggie Dog and The Cheezy Pup are other options on the food van’s menu.
