Holidays to Benaulim take you to Goa's less developed south side. They give you a calm beach, relaxed nights and fantastic Goan cuisine.
Benaulim plays things just right. This South Goan fishing village set between palm groves and paddy fields comes with a laid-back vibe without being too off-the-radar. Its star attraction is the long, white-sand beach, though there are intriguing churches and fantastic seafood restaurants here, too.
Benaulim’s beach comes with pristine waters filled with marine life – which is why it’s rather popular for snorkelling and diving. Swimmers and watersports enthusiasts also get in on the action, and the beach shacks serve up seafood and beers.
Relaxation is the thing in Benaulim, and for winding down off-beach there are traditional Indian treatments available at some of the bigger hotels. Ayurvedic massage is very popular – it’s a blissful rub-down with specially chosen essential oils. Or some people opt for a shave or haircut, followed by an Indian head massage.
With Benaulim being a fishing village, there’s no shortage of boats ready to take visitors out and about. There are trips out to spot dolphins at play, and ones that allow you to get up close to crocodiles. You’ve also got the option of an evening cruise, when you can watch the sun set over the Arabian sea as you head to the famous flea market at Anjuna. The trip takes about an hour and a half each way.
